I didn't have good luck with "ANY" pizza.
My visit to Amsterdam last Fall I tried a few slices of pizza here and there. It didn't taste that great, seemed 'dry' and 'left out for a long time'. it tasted like ...greasycheeseshit. Anyone have a better pizza place to visit for the next time I go?
Thanks,
Thanks,
The places you see all across the centre of Amsterdam, with pizza sold by the slice, all tend to leave the pizza out on display until it's all gone - very dodgy!
Now don't get me wrong, we've probably all found ourselves guilty of wandering up and down at some point with chronic munchies and end up buying a slice or two despite our own brains trying to tell ourselves through the haze that this really isn't the best of ideas... I know I have...
The best pizza's will be found in a "proper" pizza restaurant - cooked fresh -not looking or tasting like greasycheeseshit - you know the sort of thing....
It's very tempting just to pop in and grab a slice as you stagger past, but unless they've just opened up in the morning (and then you've got to beware the stuff they had left over from the night before) and have fresh goods on display that they're prepared to sell you before they get rid of the "leftovers" first, then the chances are you won't enjoy it much.
The place opposite De Kuil is usually quite good for fresh munchies, cakes etc. but I can't for the life of me remember if they do pizza as well...
These days I try and hold off the pangs of hunger until I can hit one of the many wok places and eat something fresh and moderately healthy!

went to an Italian restaurant near Leidseplein Square that was decent and fairly priced, i think it was something like 7 or 8 euro for a pizza, which was more than edible....don't know what it was called but i can tell you it was on a corner of an intersection.

For slices, New York Pizza (branches all over town) is the best of a bad bunch. Don't expect NY or Napoli standards, but it's good enough and probably won't give you salmonella like the RLD vintage pizzamongers.
Rene's Croissants on Damstraat, just off the Dam is great for snacks too, if a bit pricier than the one opposite 420, which I also highly recommend.

€4 Euro Pizza
If you're near the Leidseplein, there's a great Italian Pizza shop on the same street as Rookies CS. Mushroom (funghi) cheese & Tomato 10" Pizza freshly baked for €4 (Sept 2008 prices)

da Portare Via
You guys need to check out da Portare Via on Leileigracht, exactly one block west of the Grey Area. This isn't your gummy, doughy slice of sheet pizza you find lining the Centrum's steegs and winkels. It's a high-end artisanal classic Roman style with ingredients like mascarpone, black truffles, arugula, artichokes, and parma ham. "Da-Portare-Via" means "to-go" in Italian, and the concept is to provide you with a artisanal pizza in a no-frills setting. It's a thin crust pie but there's some chewiness to the dough, i.e. it's not a cracker crust.
I first became aware of the place by noticing the queue of Nederlanders standing outside for a pie. It's a tiny storefront bedecked with a striped orange and white awning and a bench in front. You walk up to the counter and choose your pizza. If you want beverages, you can get soft drinks, beer, or wine from the fridge before paying. Although I've never bought alcohol there, I've read elsewhere that a bottle of red will run you as little as €7. Depending on how busy they are, your pizza will be ready in 30 min. You then have the opton of taking it away with you to eat at home or beside a nearby canal, or eating at the bench adorning the front of the store. Or you can pick up your pie and head to the Cafe Brandon on the corner facing the Keizersgracht for a beer. I've also been able to bring my pizza into the bar directly across, but I can't remember the name of the bar unfortunately.
I've always been tempted to bring a pie into the Grey Area (since they don't serve food, I imagine this wouldn't be a problem) but there's never an empty seat there. On a nice summer's evening though, I have no probem with dining al fresco by the Singel.
Pizzas are cheap and range from €5 to €12.50 depending on the type of pie you choose. Unfortunately, they don't open til 5:00 pm so it's an evening option only and I don't believe they'll stay open long enough to serve the nightcrawlers trolling de Wallen. Buon apetito!

Any pizza made in an authentic pizza oven is already better than any slice only option.
One should never settle for just a slice, this is akin to sentencing yourself to hard time.
Pizza is meant to be served as a whole, not left on a heat rack.
I urge the stomach in question consider ordering a small pizza in lieu of a slice.
I love pizza, and I know without having eaten a single slice in AMS that a small fresh wheel (aka pizza) will be more appetizing.
We travel a lot and eat pizza wherever we go... authentic, non-chain store restaurant pizza is best.

Donkey smell.
Titus and Max are showing you the same place. It is the best in the centrum. If you dare venture out, there is another De Portare Via on Franshalstraat near the Albert Cuyp Markt. It is the original and better then the other. They also have tables inside and out. BUT the best authentic wood fired Italian Pizza in Amsterdam is ManjaAmore on the Maasstraat.
