AMSTERDAM, Netherlands -- The Netherlands' national museum will exhibit a jewel-encrusted platinum skull created by British artist Damien Hirst, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The piece, titled "For the Love of God," is decorated with 8,601 diamonds, including a large pear-shaped pink diamond in the forehead.

Rijksmuseum spokeswoman Elles Kamphuis said the piece was cast from a skull Hirst purchased from a London dealer of a man who died in the 18th century. The teeth are real.

According to White Cube, the commercial gallery that displays Hirst's work, the piece was sold for some $100 million to an unnamed group of investors shortly after its unveiling in 2007.

Kamphuis said the skull will be on display in Amsterdam for six weeks starting Nov. 1.
