McCain's VP Pick Acknowledged Marijuana Use

August 29, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. -Noting that his just-announced vice presidential pick, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, has acknowledged having smoked marijuana, reform advocates today urged Sen. John McCain to respect states' rights to set their own marijuana policies if he is elected president.

On Aug. 6, 2006, the Anchorage Daily News reported, "Palin said she has smoked marijuana -- remember, it was legal under state law, she said, even if illegal under U.S. law -- but says she didn't like it and doesn't smoke it now.

"'I can't claim a Bill Clinton and say that I never inhaled.'" The paper quoted Palin as saying she opposed legalization of marijuana because of the "message" that would be sent to her children.

"Governor Palin is one of many millions of Americans who have used marijuana and gone on to live productive, wildly successful lives," said Rob Kampia, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project in Washington, D.C. "That she used marijuana is no big deal, but what is a big deal is that she thinks that the 100 million Americans who have used marijuana, including herself, belong in jail. That wouldn't be good for her kids".

Source and rest of article

I don't like to get into politics on this site cause I really hate politics but I just had to comment on this one. While reading this article, especially the sentence I put in bold, I had the stoner thought of...what would happen in the usa and other drug war countries, if all or the vast majority of the pot smokers, for whatever reason, went to their local (or federal) police and turned themselves in and said "I'm a pot smoker and I belong in jail". Do you think local and federal police offices around the country would be a bit overwhelmed or what? What do you think about this idea? Please comment. Am I just being "stoner stupid" or do you think something like this could have an impact? Peace n Pot.

I think if I went to my local Garda station and told them I was a marijuana user and I should be put in jail, they'd tell me to fuck off. Either that or ask if I had any spare.

McCain seems to have made a bit of a strange choice of running mate, or perhaps it's all part of the plan. An acknowledged pot smoker, with a pregnant teenage daughter? You can't tell me he didn't know both those things when she was chosen...

I'm not about to start moralising about either, but I bet - and please forgive me if I'm generalising about our American cousins - that there are plenty of people in the US who will.

my friends got some crazy strong indian jaras (indian hash) from a police officer. so i guess that a lot of the police would have to report themselves in, wouldn't they?

If Palin reminds me of any previous vice-presidential nominee, considering the number of skeletons falling from her closet, I would say it was Thomas Eagleton.

we forget that the definition of politician is proffesional LIAR,a person that promises all and delivers none......if they are all so keen to do the job, they should do it unpaid.....then see how many want the job!!!?
