dont know if this helps you at all but if you are worried abt the shady characters the FP has a system where u need a code to unlock the front door to get in, given to u when u check in and each following morning of ur stay. ppl not staying at the FP are not allowed in, this is all as of 2004 :D

Nirvana - funny you should mention that, was just reading a post on the pigs forum about how strict they are on non guests going in. I'll mull it over a bit and then decide, maybe do a few nights in uptown and a couple in downtown.

BigRigRob - cheers....like that Yoda picture  gotta send that to a mate of mine, he's a big star wars nut.

Luthier - im up for having a smoke, will sort out venue, times etc closer to the day.

I've stayed at both, They give you a card as a key for both the front door and your room/dorm, like in some hotels. If you lose it they'll cancel the old one and make a new one, and they're 1 euro, which is refundable if you give it back. In the Downown they have a turnstile which needs a card by reception, although this doesnt stop you bringing your mates as you can hand the card back and it'll work again. I think its more to stop junkies and thieves.
you can book each of them by the night, so maybe stay a few nights in each. The uptown is smaller and more chilled, and right next to Vondelpark Personally I'd want to be at the downtown on arrival and departure day as it's less than 3 mins walking to CentraalStation.
...phew

Yeah that pic reminds me of my uncle Leo. Haven't since him since my bar mitzvah. He tried to feel up my sister.

I was thinking along those lines too ash, arrival isnt a problem as im getting there for about 9am, plenty of time to settle in. And i managed to get an afternoon flight back so no 4-5am scrambles to get out of the hostel and down to centraal.....catching my flight was a very close call last time & thats when i was staying a few mins from the station & had someone to wake me. Departure day makes sense though, especially if i overdo things on my last night....which everyone does do

Geoff...Yoda looks like your uncle??

Thanks Flybynite, i'll be happy to get you some menupics, i noticed that your Basjoe's one is a few years old so i'll get you one from there & i'll have another scan through the menu's, if im dropping in somewhere and know your pics a couple of years old or more i'll get you an update.

Luthier...both pigs have cctv & night security, a safe for valuables, locker in your room. Im not sure about what security they have on the luggage room though?

if i remember correctly the room is padlocked and you have to go to the front desk to get it opened up.

You might be safer storing your luggage in the train station lockers before you check in. Just a thought. I know I'd rather store my luggage in a locker than in a room at a hostel with other peoples luggage, even if it did have CCTV.

Last trip i will ne honest i left my luggage and shit on my bed, or under it, however i left it...everything was fine. If they wanted new clothes they werent gonna get any from my bag anyways....Locker in a room with a padlock on it works good enough to me...seems safer than most places having a secuirty guy and a CCTV.

Nah, the security on the luggage round sounds good enough to me. Right, Flying pig sounds like the place to go. Seems to have good security, nice bars, cheap beer, nice and social, cheap!! and plenty of facilities.

thanks for the info

Had a brainwave - i went to multimap direction finder and did a walking route from centraal to the street the uptown hostel is on, and it came back at around 1.2 miles, which is nothing really.
