THE HAGUE, 19/09/08 - Around 5 percent of the Dutch population aged 15-65 are current cannabis users. The drug is particularly popular among men in their late twenties, show figures released by the Central Bureau for Statistics (CBS).
Last year, 30 percent of men and 18 percent of women aged between 15 and 65 years said they had ever smoked cannabis. Just over 7 percent of men and 2 percent of women had done this in the 30 days preceding the survey.
For men the percentage of recent cannabis users was highest in the age group 25 to 30 years (16 percent). Among females, the 15-19 age group stood out (7 percent), although boys of the same age scored higher here as well (12 percent).
Men with primary school as their highest level of completed education are much more likely to use cannabis than men with higher professional or university education. For women the correlation between education level and cannabis use is less clear, although women with only primary education were still nearly twice as likely to use cannabis in 2007 as women with a higher education level.
Cannabis use is considerably higher in cities than in rural areas. In 2007 the use in very densely populated areas among men was five times as high (17 percent) as among men in the countryside (3 percent). Women living in cities were four times as likely to use cannabis as those in more rural areas.
