Pick-pockets ??

Post by mazdog »

In all of the Amsterdam travel books i've read they mention to be careful of the pick-pockets, thugs and generally shady people.

Is this really a problem? or just something they mention in travel books for any major city?? I just keep seeing it so i figured i should ask the experts

I do fine calming, the fact that i am a pretty big guy (6 foot 2, and the better part of 300lbs) so i'm thinkin, that in-and-of-itself might ward off a good number of evil doers. And i recently picked up one of those "travel wallets" that goes on your belt, but i will inevitably end up with pockets full of money/drugs/camera/etc.

So long as you have some common sense you should be fine. Obvious things like not leaving any belongings unattended should be kept in mind - but also large crowd's in busy areas (e.g Red Light District) people are always bumping into you and weaving their arms and legs in the space between you and the guy infront - so I just make sure none of my valuables are accessable from outside my clothes (generally put all in my inside jacket pocket and keep in done up when large crowds around.

I think if any crime would be comitted against you it would only be pickpocketing due to the majority of bums on the street looking for a bit of change for their next hit.

Just to note - I am 6'2 but only around 160lbs and have never felt uncomfortable or intimidated by anyone even late at night in the RLD - so long as you have an open mind and everyday common sense - you will have an awesome time in Amsterdam.

Well I have to say that in all the times I have been I have never feared for my safety or felt uneasy, and I am only 5'4" and female!!!! I agree - if you don't act like an asshole, you won't be treated like one and if you are cautious, you won't get into trouble or be pickpocketed.

Still pays to be very aware. They have also improved their craft over the last ten years. They work in groups. They do exist, and they can get you. Put your stuff where it is hard to get. Someone bumps into you, check your stuff quickly. They are very good at what they do. They are very good at taking advantage of you in a moment of weakness or a moment of being to stoned. The least likely looking people(kids and old ladies) are the worst offenders.

milehigh, never had a problem, but always on the lookout.
