Fines for breaking the smoking ban
25/09/2008

Amid complaints, the Dutch Health Minister announces fines beginning 1 October for shop owners caught breaking the smoking ban.

AMSTERDAM -- Owners of bars, cafe and restaurants caught breaking the smoking ban will be fined from 1 October, Health Minister Ab Klink announced on Wednesday.

Until now, owners breaking the law for the first time were given a warning. However, now that bars and cafes are beginning to put ashtrays back on their tables, he said that tougher measures are required.

Mr Klink showed little sympathy for complaints by the Dutch association of hotels, restaurants and cafes. The association says the smoking ban caused chaos in the industry and threatened bars with the loss of clients and possible bankruptcy. Mr Klink says there is no evidence of income loss and that the institute's comments were exaggerated.
