Hi, Off to The Dam again on 22 October for 5 days. after the bike hire success of last time i'm definitely gonna repeat that this time but raise it up a notch. Therefore i have a few questions for those in the know:
1. Is there anywhwere i can hire a 'normal' road bike - ie not a bright red/yellow low-frame "I'M A TOURIST!!!!!" bike ?
2. I like the non-central coffeshops anyway but are there any out-of-the-way coffeeshops people here would recommend? (I don't mean MY etc, more Het Baloonetje, Katsu - the ones that don't get too much of a mention)
3. Is it feasible to cycle to Harlem, have a smoke, pick up some buds and cycle back all in the same day - has anyone ever done this, if so how long a cycle is it? i'm no Pantani but i'm in fairly good shape - or is it just a crazy idea?
Thanks in advance if you bother to answer all or any,
Matty

Rent a "normal" oomafiets (granny bike). Road bikes and Mt. Bikes stand out more, if you're looking to blend in.
BikeCity.nl has 7-speed bike, but you'll never need it.
Remember, it's flat. You don't need much machine. My wife, being a munchkin, rode a smaller bike that was single gear and had no problem getting to Haarlem and back.
Easily done. Plan on 2 hours each way for getting lost and stoned. It will take less. Head west from Haarlemerplein and follow the signs. Red is the city route, and Green is the "scenic" route. Once in Haarlem, we wandered around, had frites, met MHD and his lovely friends, bailed out around 4 while we still had daylight and were back in Amsterdam for dinner around 6pm.
Not doing it is the crazy idea.
Once you've done that you'll want to be sure to ride out to Muiden Castle.
Op die Fiets,
chuck.

Thanks Pala/chuck , just the kind of response i was looking for - just couldn't get on with the Granny bike last time - don't want a mountain bike, but a road bike is ideal - i'll check out that bikecity place
thanks for the tips on the Harlem ride -looks like a go-er (weather permitting) I take it you guys took the green scenic route?
Thats 1 and 3 answered brilliantly, anyone help me with Qu 2?

Yep scenic route. When you see IKEA you're getting close.
On the way back we ended up near the runway at Schiphol and hit Amsterdam somewhere near Rembrantpark.

There is quite a few shops in the Vicinity of Katsu and the Sarphatipark. They are listed in zone G in the directory and quite a few are not reviewed or to far off the map.
I can reccomend Greenhouse Tolstraat, but there is quite a few others that always turn out to be little gems.
You probably know this already but i thought i would give my opinion.
Have a good one (Miss you by a day)

Coffeeshop D&L
https://www.coffeeshopdirect.com/DandL.html
seems to have good prices, and if you look it up on google maps you'll see it's really close to centrum and katsu etc in de pijp.
I can only review their Silver Haze, which seems great, and nice big unshaken buds a 25Eur for 5 grams!! It didnt taste that hazey, but was good quality. You get 5 grams for the price of 2 from barneys! deal!

Nice one Kermit, i've added Greenhouse Tolstraat to the list - i like Namaste and Centrum so no doubt Tolstraat will live up to the high Greenhouse standards.
