Support the locals
Don't want to sound like i'm preaching but wanted to get something off my chest, reminded by BigBudz report and his amazing sarnie:
When you go to The Dam, why not try to eat/buy from local places. I read so many reports on here, saying "went to MCD's" or "popped into Burger King" or "had a KFC". You can have all those things back home, they aren't made from quality or fresh ingredients and most of your money just goes into the coffers of mega-rich huge American capitalist conglomerates.
Why not try and eat at a local place - then you are supporting the Amsterdam culture and vibe, the local people and trying something new, not to mention most likely eating higher quality, fresher produce. Places like Croissanterie D’oude Brug, mentioned in BigBudz report i read yesterday are common across Amsterdam, as are some top quality restaurants. I could list a whole load here as i'm sure could several other regular visitors.
So next time you get the munchies, rather than heading for the bright lights of capitalist culture, why not dive down a side road and find a hidden gem? If you don't there may not be many of them left soon!

No offence but that whole street is a tourist trap and I think I'd be pushed to eat there even if it was free, lots of local places scattered about, the Green Elephant (de groene olifant - sarphatistraat 510) for one is a classy little eet-cafe where you'll get spoken to in Dutch and then when you explain that you're english they have to find the waitress that speaks the best english to come and serve you.Boris wrote:I have to agree with Matty on this one.
I can recommend heading down to lange leidsedwarsstraat, this is a road full of local reasturants; italian, greek, indian, tai, dutch, etc.. Prices start at 5 Euros for a Pizza, much better than a McShit burger.
For a quality sandwich head to Broodje Bert - Singel 321, I had the best BLT and apple pie from here a few times.
I do agree with you that it is a tourist trap, but I've eaten there plenty of times and given the cheap prices in some of the reasturants in aint that bad and never come away with the runsBoner wrote:No offence but that whole street is a tourist trap and I think I'd be pushed to eat there even if it was free, lots of local places scattered about, the Green Elephant (de groene olifant - sarphatistraat 510) for one is a classy little eet-cafe where you'll get spoken to in Dutch and then when you explain that you're english they have to find the waitress that speaks the best english to come and serve you.Boris wrote:I have to agree with Matty on this one.
