Rail & Sail

Post by Drenbt »

Just in process of planning yet another trip but probably not going to opt for the usual plane method for varies reasons.

Has anyone used this service?

http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/rail-and-sail/holland/

Apparently you can get an overnight ferry, have a sleep then arrive in holland and just take a train and your there within an hour of arriving! So the whole journey takes 6/7 hours, most of our american travellers take that long and thats via plane! And in anycase at £110 return you can't go wrong.

Any feedback?

sadly they withdrew the high speed ferry last year and now the journey is 2 1/2 hours longer but wow that's a price hike!!!!! last year it was 50 great british pounds...RETURN.....and the stena discovery high speed ferry was way better...plus you could toke to yer hearts content out on the sun deck at the back of the ferry too...at those prices,i'd rather spend an extra 15 pounds and fly from local airport saving me at least 5 hours toking time ..........another option to appear soon will be the ferry from great yarmouth to ijmuiden, starting supposedly from 2009 as soon as they finish the port construction (weeks away)

actually( not to be a prick or anything) but depending on many different factors a non-stop flight from the states will take anywhere from 7 hrs. eastcoast to 10hrs. west coast. 10 hours is a long fucking time trapped on a plane, sorry westcoasters.

Its more with the return journey in mind and lack of police prescence when travelling via ferry.

When I was last travelling out to Dam couple weeks back from Luton there were a group of about 12 police officers standing menacingly by the departure lounge just after you put your bags through security. This still didnt stop me carrying on the way back but it severely limited the amount as all I could think about was the feds I saw on the outbound journey. Needless to say the return journey was uneventful and it was straight through 118, but within a week and half I'm back to square one! Gotta have some decent smoke at xmas this year!

I've only done it coming back. It is a much more relaxing way to travel, and yeah - you can smoke up on the boat. I didnt see any customs or dogs anywhere.

When we got on a friendly dutch passport officer asked as where we had come from, we said Amsterdam and he smiled and waved us on board.

In the UK we were passport checked just as in an airport and that was it - no dogs, or bag checks anywhere. We were on foot, maybe its different if you have a car/van. I didnt carry a huge amount, only about half an ounce.

Try Kayak.co.uk - they search pretty much all airlines, and don;t charge you - you book direct with the carrier.

The only time I've had bags searched were coming back on a boat into Newcastle, luckily I was carrying it on my person and they didn't check me just the bags. :D
