Charles Dickens - A Child's History of England.

I didn't pay attention to much at school, so, I'm catching up now. (only 63 never too late) But what I really like about the book, it's a fast journey through the power structures and development of this Island nation from the ancient's right up until Dickens' time in the mid 1800's, the early warlords, later on the Royalty and Parliaments and of course the curse of the competing religious establishments and its a real page turner. What a terrible blood soaked history we have and this is only within these Islands and our immediate neighbor's. Terrorism, double dealing and the most exotic methods of torture and death you can imagine. The Islamofascists don't have to write their own manuals, just read this one.
But mainly it's a good potted history written in Dickens's wry style and its a good reference point for further studies/reading.
What a long strange trip it is.

Great choice! Once in a solo trip I spent my time only in reading books by Kerouac and Bookowski. Had also the inspiration to leave them in the hotel hall :D You could enjoy so much of the '69 spirit between narrows and people of the Dam, that's one of the thing I love more.

The Corner - a book written by the creator of The Wire about a corner of a neighborhood in Baltimore called Fayette Street. It is a low income, high hard drug use and high crime area of the city and it is used as a way to gain insight into firstly the failure of the American drug war and secondly the failure of the safe keeping of the America's most at risk members of society. By focusing on one part of the neighborhood it gives such a better insight into the problem and succeeds in showing a wider problem with American society. Extremely good read, highly recommended.
