It started off very good, it does lose a bit of steam in the middle, but its ramping up again

During my 'enforced' time off from having a wee smoke, which usually means being able to read and retain the written word!!! ..... I managed to get through and really enjoy a few books over the last few weeks...

I read the firm favourite of the forum "Mr Nice", by "Howard Marks" and although at first I thought, I'm not getting into this at all, it grew on me and it got to the stage I'd glance at the clock and find it was 3am in the morning!! So much for I'll read for an hour before catching some ZZZZZZZZ.....!
Also re-read "A Tale of Two Cities", by good old "Charlie Dickens". An excellent read and one I'd recommend to anyone.(As was "Great Expectations" which was the 2nd book encluded in this large volume, for the price of half a pint of beer!!, from the 'book man' who'd turn up and leave all sorts to catch your attention, at my former employers)
For anyone who might think, "Naw, fuck that. They made us read that in school and I couldn't be having that stopping and starting, drawing out sentences that last for half a page...", man o' man stick with it and reap the rewards. Once you get into the rhythm of it, it's a fantastic read and 200 million copies sold says it all.
For me it's a case of Please Sir, I want some more!!!

Hey "Cisco"!! Glad you're enjoying the "Stuart MacBride" books!! My pal "Helen" who buys the books then passes them down the line for the rest of us to read!! has the latest one that's just come out, but before that gets to me I read "Blind Eye" and "Dark Blood" in the series and was delighted with both. They are just so entertaining and for any of the forum members who like the likes of "Rebus" as you mentioned, i'm sure they'd enjoy these gritty stories, and cracking characters! DI "Steel" should get a book all to herself.
I keep thinking I'll see the books turned into a TV dramas, but then I think they'd ruin the stories trying to make them fit for broadcast!!!
If this stokes anyone to give these books a go, I really would advise to read the books in the order they were published as you'll get a better appreciation of the characters and how they develop, but the stories do stand alone if you just find one and fancy a rollercoaster of a ride.
Come on "Cattales1960" and "geoffk"!! Give one a go! I'd love to know what those of you across the pond make of the "Aberdeen" that "Stuart MacBride" gives you, than the "Trump" golfing experience he's hoping for!!

IM always game for a new read. So the author is Stuart McBride? Currently I am reading "The Help" which is as good as everyone told me. I have not seen the movie yet. I always try and read the book first.

The Hacienda - How not to run a club by Peter Hook. Just started it but some of the stories are funny and being a fellow Salfordian i know of some of the pubs etc he talks about.

And 13 things that don't make sense - Its about things that science just doesn't have an answer for i.e. the placebo effect. Fascinating if you're into that sort of thing

I can only read non fiction. I've tried to read the likes of Hemmingway but its just not for me. I get bored to easily . At the moment I'm reading.

Chickenhawk ( Robert mason).
The True story of Rober Mason, a young helicopter pilot in Vietnam. Mason flew more than 1000 assault missions between 65 & 66 and this is his shocking account. Scary stuff. This isn't my kind of book usually, but it definitely gets you thinking ... Fcuk that. It's very well written and I would definitely recommend giving it a read.

Next up is ... Pot Planet , adventures in global Marijuana culture (Brian Preston).

'Perdido Street Station' by China Mieville, good alternate world, bio engineered remaking, very dark, on my next trip will have an alternative history set in Albertian London of the 19th century, 'The Strange Affair of Spring-Heeled Jack' by Mark Hodder, looks good.

Finished James Thompson's Kari Vaara detective series. Pretty good books. They are graffic, but good. Set in Finland and they explore the dark side of Finland. Currently reading Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp series. Finished Kill Shot last night and it was killer. It kept me up late because had find out how it ended...

ARTYMAC, Thank you for turning me onto a very good thriller writer. Of course at the beginning I had to adjust to the different style of writing of your country, but that didnt take long and I could not put down this book. FLESHHOUSE but Stuart MacBride. OMG was it good. I highly recommend this author for anybody who is into thrillers. Warning: I dont know about his other books but this was very graphic!

so i finished the 'god delusion' by richard dawkins, and then read 'god is not great' by christopher hitchens... both fantastic. i preferred dawkins though for factual amunition. hitchens is more philosophical/opinion, where as dawkins ismuch more scientific.

so after a brief flirtation with new atheism, im back to enlgish history again.

with 'reprobates' by peter stubbs, which deals with what it meant to be a cavalier around the civil war era.

I will definately be reading some more of his. I finally started 1963 by stephen King.
