A proud day for those from Michigan -- 17 electoral votes for Barack Obama and the 13th state to pass medical cannabis legislation, both declared minutes ago.

With 99 percent of Michigan precincts reporting this morning, the vote on medical cannabis cracked solidly this way, allowing qualifying patients to possess up to 2.5 ounces and grow up to 12 plants:
Yes -- 2,988,525, 63%
No -- 1,782,463, 37%

Also, an expansion of stem-cell research passed 53-47, essentially allowing researchers to use in-state embryos, rather than buying them from out of state.

The American auto industry hangs in the balance, our unemployment rate is the nation's worst, and we're entering the fourth year of what used to be a one-state recession. And I couldn't be any prouder of us.

The words on the welcome signs as you drive into the state never meant more to me than they do today: Yes! Michigan!

CJ, dont forget about the decriminilization act that passed in MA, possession of an ounce or less is only a $100 fine, no arrest, no CORI report. :D

Barney Frank is my friggin' hero, Nirvana!

God bless the people of Massachusetts, another treasured bastion of liberalism.

And you're right, Nirvana, New York is next, as soon as enough people feel pissed off or empowered enough over the stupid policies targeting minorities in the city to do something about it (as you know, but others might not, if an NYC cop asks if you have weed, NEVER hand it over yourself, make them search you, even if you have admitted possession, because that's only a civil fine...if you actually pull it out and hand it over, it's public use/display, which is a criminal charge).

New York knows the scam now and won't put up with this crap much longer.

Michigonians (?) should be proud! The ballot measure passed by 63%! The right medicine will (hopefully) now get to the people of Michigan that need it. Well done!

If I remember right; Michiganders can have 12 flowering plants as opposed to our (Colorado) 6. That's very nice. I'm not sure how the provider aspect will work out. By provider, I mean the grower who can have copies of the patient's registration and grow their weed for them. For example if I have 4 patient's registrations, I'll grow 24 plants for them. This helps as the patients can have a choice of medicine.

According to the wording of the passed bill. The provider may have 2 1/2 ounces of dried bud per client on them without any penalty of law.
