You are too paranoid. RLD at night is packed with people.. old, young, white, black, asian, middle eastern, what have you...

There are guided tours that go through the place at night in groups.

Don't let the RLD scare you unless you are truly a lamb in lamb's clothing.. then, I would think going to the food market would be scary for u.

Maybe not worth going "window shopping" unless you're actually going to "sample the merchandise".

I am no oil painting and I'm sure that the ladies do have some self respect even if they are selling themselves.

Only I can make sure that they don't lose that self respect because of me.

 What I mean is if you go to the Red Light District then it would be better to go in to one of the rooms instead of just looking around all the girls in the windows.

Window shopping means to look at the items in a shop window but not buy anything.

Doog, you really shouldn't feel embarassed about going around the RLD. It is one of the highlights of Amsterdam.
Try sitting out the back of Stones Cafe with a spliff and a beer for courage, just watching the punters coming and going, it's awesome.
And don't think that all these girls are lovely to look at, far from it, especially during the daylight hours, they are old enough to be your grandma and look as though they have fallen out of the Ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down, amazing to think people pay for their services.

doog, i give up. dont go to the rld if you are just going to scare the girls. how ugly can you be? dont worry there are some rough looking girls in some of those windows. also, i cant be certain but i would bet that most prostitutes dont calculate their self worth based on what their punters look like. in fact im sure of it. ive seen some right monsters go in with the prettiest of window girls. call me unromantic but i think they are more interested your money than your looks.
as far as window shopping goes. that is why they stand in windows, so that you can see the goods up for sale. you wont get charged for looking, and the girls wont think less of themselves for being looked at.

Compared with London or New York, though, it’s all safe
I too was a lil concerend with how the RLD would be (more for my girlie than me) but it was totally fine....not as seedy as you might think and quite entertaining really. There are parts of the city here where i live that i will NOT go to day or night!! I didn't venture into any areas in the dam where i felt like that.

hahaha another bites the dust eh....it only take s a few bags to relize that the hefty price tag is worth it. Good luck finding a good deal and if you don't mind let us know what deal you end up with. I'm curious what they go for over there vs. here in the states (mine was about $530 delivered).

Not only is the RLD considered a tourist attraction - therefore being one of the safest parts of the city to visit; but also it's the oldest part of Amsterdam.....just think of all that history you would be missing out on.

And if you are worried about looks then don't - all the girls see you as, is a walking €50!! :)

i love the rld for window shopping at anytime of day or night. i have never felt threatened. almost anywhere you go you are on police survailance cameras anyway.

as for actual shopping, i have found the smaller singel rld district is much better.

we were sitting in amnesia (so sorry you missed it valo) and doing time studies on the lady across the alley. at one point she had 3 customers in less then 50 minutes. the only information we really lacked was how much it cost her to rent the kramer. any ideas?

and you were right the sharks breath 9.50e was out standing. so was the cantolope haze. i think it was 11e. there seemed to be alot of 11e weed in the dam this year.

Okay okay okay.

I will consider the pros and cons of a walk through the RLD on the last full day, before returning home, of my next visit to Amsterdam, which will last seven days.

I will hopefully be able to save a few notes each day incase I find something particularly eye-catching (shouldn't be hard).

Are there more street dealers/ pimp types around during the day or do they tend to crawl out at night time?

the "bad lot" is there all the time but they do seem to be more numerous during the evening. as long as you ignore them and do not make eye contact, you will be just fine.

My sister who is 38, and myself, who happens to be 50, stumbled onto the RLD, un-intentionally, only then did we realize our hotel was in that area, which happened to be fine, we are 2 women, we were alone, was in that area alot, great smoke shops, no problems, My sister was a little caught off guard, but other than that, we had no-issues any-where, some great little smoke in that area,,can't wait to go back,,,friends and family are calling me home, love the dam,,,
