Lelystad to build Indonesian village

Hundreds of houses built in authentic Indonesian style will be seen on small peninsulas in Lelystad.

LELYSTAD – The city of Lelystad is going to build an Indonesian village consisting of hundreds of houses with pointed roofs, porches and inner gardens.

The Indonesian village, Desa Warande, will be built on small peninsulas in an existing Lelystad district.

The initiators say nearly a thousand people have already applied to live there. Many are of mixed Dutch/Indonesian descent but anyone with a love of Indonesia is welcome. The initiators are considering starting similar projects elsewhere in the Netherlands, for instance in Almere and Leeuwarden.

Indonesia was a Dutch colony for hundreds of years until the country won its independence in 1949.

After independence, hundreds of thousands of people of mixed European and Indonesian ancestry moved to the Netherlands because they were unable or unwilling to integrate into Indonesian society.
