Van Gogh water colour fetches €151,000
03 December 2008

A water colour painting by Vincent van Gogh has fetched €151,000 at an auction by Christie’s in Amsterdam, almost three times the expected price, reports Wednesday’s NRC.

Van Gogh, one of the most famous 19th century artists in the world, painted the winter scene Voluit Winter, Ook in het Leven in 1877, before he considered himself good enough to be called an artist.

During this period Van Gogh had various jobs such as gallery assistant, teacher and book-seller.

At the same time he covered the walls of his room in Amsterdam with the work of artists he admired and sometimes tried to copy them.

The painting Voluit Winter is a copy of a lithograph of a painting by Jozef Israels which Van Gogh made with pencil, water colour and brown ink. It is one of just two aquarelles from this period in Van Gogh’s life.

It is not known who bought the work.
