Schiphol airport hit by flight tax
08 December 2008

The number of people using Amsterdam's Schiphol airport is down by 525,000 since the introduction of an extra tax on flying on July 1, the Telegraaf reports on Monday, quoting preliminary figures.

By contrast, the number in Germany’s Weeze airport, just south of Arnhem, is up 300%.
Dutch people travelling from Brussels airport is up 74%.

The flight tax has added €11.25 to flights up to 2,500 km and €45 for longer journeys.

So thats way it's cheaper.... I was like WTF when doing a search for flights over the past weeks.
You can fly from ORD (O'Hare) to DUB (Dublin) for $75 to $150 cheaper, depending on day, flight provider, and booking site,... and there's a brief lay-over at AMS each way! I was thinking it had to be something to do with "Fees".

I don't think they'd take too kindly to totally leaving out the Dublin part of the trip and just arrive & depart from AMS.... Ooops "Missed my flights both times, Sorry."
I wonder though.... It's actually a KLM flight from ORD to AMS, then a Air Lingus to Dublin.... return same.... if they'd catch on? :P
Nah... it'd be my luck they'd get pissed and charge me a fine plus the tax fee!

The tax is being dropped from the 1st of July, I read. I wasn't charged it on the easyjet flight I booked last week for the end of July. :)

Info here (in Dutch):-

The last time I missed a flight was back in Feb '08, did a two night in A'Dam and 5 nights in Interlaken Switzerland. It was snowing to beat all hell and it looked like the flights out of PIA (Peoria) were going to be canceled.. so I hoped the Amtrak up to Chicago then the Blue Line out to ORD... Yelp they ended up cancelling the flight out of PIA, glad I took the Amtrak up!
The flight over to A'Dam was near empty, canceled flights from all over, so I was able to stretch out in a center row all by myself.

Anyway on the return from Switzerland we were delayed so I missed my flight back to PIA, when I went to check-in for maybe a later flight or atleast the earliest flight the next morning the gal behind the counter gave me attitude about not catching the flight to Chicago... I told her I took it upon myself to catch the train up so I wouldn't miss my Euro flight, and since no one wanted to answer the phones at PIA that snowy day.... she said that I was supposed to check in and let them know I was not on that flight...... "IT WAS CANCELED... LOOK IT UP... GEESH!!!! I made the Euor part, BOTH WAYS, whats the problem!?"
Well she didn't like that response so booked me on a late afternoon flight next day to Peoria.
Bag all that, I went to the Blue line the next morning and caught the Amtrak back home.... after spending the night at the airport which is a lot safer then wondering the streets in downtown Chi-Town!

Then there was the time, back in March '07, I took the wife on a 3 week Euro tour.... they suckered us into leaving Peoria only to be stranded in ATL (Atlanta) for the night, but they did give us a free room.... after I had to HUNT down our luggage which was placed on carousel a few down from the one it was supposed to be on. WTF!? Our luggage was on a carousel from LAX!!!
Talk about a cluster F*** in the terminal/ gate area.... long lines, hundreds of people, and only two agents helping people! I said bag this and went to the main counter up top at the main check in.... where they had 15 to 17 agents just standing there doing nothing! And the boss even went around asking people if they would work over time....!!

Another screwed up thing about the baggage carousels in ATL.... all kinds of people were standing in line at the 'Lost Luggage Counter'.... like maybe 70 to 80 people..... and the guy decides it's break time, goes into a little office and closes the blinds!
I thought there was gunna be a riot then and there... security had to come over!!!

Then coming back from that trip..... this is Delta by the way..... we were on a flight from ATL to PIA... there were storms in Peoria so we were wondering if we'd even leave ATL.... well we finally left, only to have to turn around half way home and head back to ATL cuz the aircrafts weather radar was on the fritz!!! Well by the time we made it back to ATL and switched planes the storms at PIA had passed!
