More damage caused by North-South metro line

A café opposite the central station saw cracks appear to its walls and floor as construction workers drove metal piles in the ground.


AMSTERDAM – Amsterdam's North-South metro line project has suffered a new setback as cracks appeared in the walls and floor of a café opposite the central station.

Cracks appeared in the walls and floor of the Noord-Zuid-Hollandse café as construction workers drove metal piles into the ground. The café first opened its doors in 1911.

Work was halted for a while, but later resumed at a slower pace to avoid more construction problems.

The damage to the café is not extensive, but adds to the ongoing series of delays, subsidences, leaks and spiralling budgets that have dogged the project since 2003.

Earlier this year, a number of buildings on the Vijzelgracht sank as leaks in the walls of the underground tunnels weakened their foundations, bringing construction work to a halt for the coming months.

That is the white house looking building across from Centraal Station also containing the VVV (tourist info center). They showed some of the cracks and damage on TV last night. That North/South Metro line is really messing up Amsterdam. Even out in my neighborhood they have motion and ground sensors to warn them of potential problems. I have read they will have to freeze the entire tunnel through area before digging to prevent even more problems.

Hey fellas, does anyone else think an Amsterdam subway is not too good an idea?

Aside from the construction's woes, correct me if I am wrong, but isn't :

1) Much (if not all) of Amsterdam below sea level. Vondel Park is something like 10 meters below sea level, right?

And

2) The water table throughout the Randstadt is very high? (As a consequence of 1?)

If either one, or both, of these issues are true then that does not bode well for underground transport, right?

Amsterdam people do pay huge taxes due to the building of this crazy line !!!

They already have four lines in operation.

I knew that.

My objection was to subway lines in places with water tables, potentially, subject to serious flood risks.

I also know that, unlike many parts of North America , the Dutch will have built in multiple redundancies in the system as part of their risk mitigation strategy. Hence, I guess, there should be few problems once the new line is completed.
