The city wants to replace strip cards with public transport electronic chip card by April 2009.

AMSTERDAM – Amsterdam is planning to introduce the public transport electronic chip card in the capital from April 2009.

The city will go ahead with its plan to replace the present 'strip cards' after the government gives the go ahead. The change will first be made on the metro and afterwards on buses and trams.

Rotterdam is scheduled to introduce the chip card by the end of January when it will be the only means of payment on the city's metro network.
Rotterdam's public transport company launched a major campaign on Tuesday to publicise the change.

Interesting, I noticed they installed the readers on busses in Utrecht about a year ago but still havent started selling the cards. As long as fares dont go up im not complaining, I much prefer using my Oyster Card than paying cash.
