Campsites

Post by Lemming »

Camping is a good alternative to a hotel or hostel if the weather isn’t too bad. I’ve done it twice in conjunction with driving rather than flying to the Netherlands. I’ve got a big frame tent so it’s not practical to carry it without a car.

It’s quite feasible to drive from where I live near Bristol in the UK, catch a ferry from Dover to Calais and be in a coffeeshop before they close the same day. This isn’t much longer than it takes to get to a London airport, check-in and fly. The motorways in northern France, Belgium and Netherlands are free of tolls, so there are no extra costs.

Dutch campsites are of a high standard and, of course, absolutely flat! This is quite a contrast to the bumpy sloping fields of UK campsites. They also have huts and permanently erected tents for hire. There are four campsites around Amsterdam. They are all some distance from the centre but have good public transport links. They are also all very easy to get to by car but, once you get there, it’s best to leave your car at the site rather than trying to drive into and park in the centre.

Vliegenbos (Meeuwenlaan 138, 1022 AM, website)
The closest site to the centre of the city. It’s in Amsterdam-Noord, the northern suburb across the IJ behind Centraal Station. There are two free ferry services across the IJ, one of which runs 24 hours a day. It’s feasible to walk to and from the site this way but there’s also bus service from right by the campsite and night busses from Centraal Station.

Amsterdam-Noord is very different to central Amsterdam but it does have a few coffeeshops listed in Zone J on the main site. The closest shop to the campsite is 't Ooievaartje.

Gaasper Camping (Loosdrechtsedreef 7, 1108 AZ, website)
At the furthest extreme of Amsterdam Zuidoost way beyond Bijlmermeer, this place is more family-orientated than Vliegenbos. It’s rather regimented with allocated plots for your tent and car parking spaces.

Gaasperdam is in Zone I on the main site. Theoretically there is a coffeeshop called “Beat Generation” nearby but I haven’t looked for it and can’t be sure it exists.

It’s at the end of one of the metro lines, which provides a fast regular service into the centre. There are also night busses.

Het Amsterdamse Bos (Kleine Noorddijk 1, 1187 NZ, website)
South of Amsterdam in Amstelveen. I’ve never been there so can’t tell you much about it.

Zeeburg (Zuider IJdijk 20, 1095 KN, website)
To the east on an island in the IJ. I haven’t been to this one either.

Anyone else stayed at these places and have anything to add?

Ive been to all of them!!!

for Het Amsterdamse Bos (Kleine Noorddijk 1) it on the other side of amsterdamese Bos park they are 2 BOS park take the wrong on in and youll be turning in circle for 5km
it VERY far from centrum you take ligne 51 metro to 3 stops b4 the end of ligne (about 40min)then walk 10min or take bus 199! from airport you take the 199 to camping (you mite have to get off and wait for next bus mid-way there)
they got beds in HUTs for 10-12.50E
prive HUT 25-50 PER person!
Camping wit a tent is about 10e
they rent sleeping bad and bikes for bikes its 5e a day sleeping bag 5e per stay!
biking from there is about same time then taking bus-metro you got about 9-10km in the park b4 you hit the streets then other 5 b4 you get to RAI once at RAI your about an other 5km from centrum station!
Amsterdamese bos park its always a stop for me i love big nature park and cant beat thins one most wonderful park in amsterdam! BUT biking to camp ground in the dark is freaky :S so if you plan on bein alot in centrum late at night its not a bike ride id adviced to do!! visiting the park is the thing to DO there|!!!
