Amsterdam parking meters card-only
09 March 2009
Parking meters which accept coins are being phased out in the centre of Amsterdam, the Telegraaf reports.
Within a few months, motorists will have to use credit or direct debit cards to park their cars, by logging in their number plate via a touch screen.
Parking tickets will no longer be issued and traffic wardens will check on a central database whether a space has been paid for.
Amsterdam wants to phase out cash payments because parking meters are often broken into.

haha. our mayor sold the parking meters to a private company. the rates are now sky high, more than 4 quarters per hour. even the busiest metered streets now have tons of parking.
on top of that they have a huge problem now with vandalism, as people take their frustrations out on the meters.
