It's about time our gov. got off their butts and did something. Now if Medical pot could be legalized, if would be a start in the right direction. AzLaker 8)

Maybe you should set up a Rastafarian church :D

So, this crazy Brazilian church in New Mexico gets the nod from the Supreme Court to drink wacky tea. I have not read the decision yet.

Now what we need is another "church" to take a Rastafarian posture, i.e. "we need it to worship God/Jah/whatever".

I would tithe that church like a FIEND :-)

From CBS News:
Roberts, in writing the opinion for the court, said the government had failed to prove that federal drug laws should outweigh the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which Congress passed in 1993 to prohibit burdening a person's exercise of religion.

At a cursory glance, it looks like there is some sort of legal test to be met as to whether the religion is "sincere" in order to be considered under this law.

Fuck, here we go...... :-)

yep, there have been a couple small "churches" that tried this approach with little luck.

The "churches" that pull it off are indeed legitimate and established "churches" practising some form of recognized "religion".

someday..hopefully.

Interesting find there Lafe.

Let's hope for changing attitudes and a government more interested in the people rather than ruling them.

I wonder if they would have been so accomodating if it had been Cannabis instead of a tea that is probably no threat to industrial profits

The Rastifarians and the Ethiopian Orthodox Chruch (and others such as the Church of Cannabis) have tried for years to fight cannabis oppression. Everytime they have challenged prohibition they have been slapped down. While the Church of Cannabis (and the other small "churches") can be dismissed as a crock religion, the Rastafari Church is recognized around the world (to the point of being given Consultative Status by the UN). Beyond that, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church is a well established sect in its own right. However, when it comes to cannabis, the International community is stubbornly blind to anything that might expiate it.

Sorry guys but the more time I have to think about this the more it pisses me off........

I live in a country where you can buy alcohol without a doctors prescription and with no limit you can buy and drink enough to kill yourself from alcohol poisoning or beat or shoot your spouse.

Now they make it legal so you can join a religion and do a mad trip once again obtaining and administering the substance with no medical supervision all nice and legal.

MEANWHILE in the majority of the U.S. you still can not have Cannabis WITH a doctors prescription even if you are screaming in pain day and night and dying even in the few states that do allow it only a very very few actually get to make use of this law because of State over supervision most will not be qualified no matter how great the need and the few who do get it well lets not forget that the Federal DEA still comes in and bust these patients from time to time every year without fail.

Is it just me or is the hypocritical bullshit getting so deep in this country that it could block out my view of the mountains

true.. and I can't agree more to that..

in Belgium however, the government has taken in account a project in which Namure (a city of southern belgium - half way between brussels and the frenco-begian border) is allowed to have a a few controlled places where government-supplied cannabis could be sold.

in other words, this project is to see how coffeeshop-like places would fit into the belgian society. this is ofcourse mainly about money and stealing a major part of the numerous french, belgian, spanish or even italian "canna-tourists" from Holland...

this new project is under detailed consideration in the belgian parliament and if is approved in March, will be allowed to occure before the end of the year 2006... I'll definatly have to go and check it out if it happens.. maybe the begining of the belgian Coffee Shops! who knows, with a bit of luck :)

Peace.

That would be great! Even if the motivation behind the move is monetary in nature, it is a step in the right direction. One more country with Cannabis Cafes is one less country without. As they say, the journey of a thousand miles starts with a step. Keep us updated, mate.

It sounds like to be sincere there has to be a ceremony and use at certain times only other than that who's to say what is sincere. The problem here is that it would take a lot of money to fight unless you could find a pro bono atty

Also I would like to say that the more places that allow it the more the WORLDs view will change I am for any where that wants to make it legal go Belgium

Didn't they have some "church of the sacred mushroom" in Europe for a short time before it was shut down? Why not have a entheogenic church and religion with all natural plants and fungus as a legal sacraments with the main commandments being to live and let live as long as it doesn't harm anyone and to respect the earth. Why can't this be legal, even have the government make it 21 and over and give detailed instructions and warnings like on cigerette packs about taking the "sacraments" and I'd be fine with that.
The bunker mentality of living is absurd.
