I am just curious is there any part of amsterdam that should be best avoided at night/eveningtimes?

i would say no. as a blissfully ignorant touritst, who generally doesnt leave the area on the coffeeshop map there is not a single area that i would avoid at any time.
naturally like any city in the world, im sure there are some areas with reputations, but if there are any in amsterdam, they are cetanly not between central station and vondelpark.
some people may say the Red Light Dist. becomes a bit unsavoury after closing time but ive stumpbled through there at 2am, lost, looking for my hotel beofre and have been 1000% safe.
the beauty of a trip to 'dam is the fact that provided you stay central you can just walk 'that way' or 'this way', any way you want, exploring. eventually, youll find somewhere you likke and you can pop in, theres no chances of taking a wrong turn and finding yourself in shit...

In all the years I've been going, only once was I told not to go to a certain area.
When I told a few people I know that I was gonna visit the ArenA for the first time a few years back, I was told by a fellow Scot NOT to venture in the opposite direction, towards the Housing estate.
I dont Know how true this is, but the guy who told me that is a 50odd year old Tartan Army Footsoldier who has been all over the globe following our wee nation.
Make of that what you will.

from wikipedia
"FEBO (pronounced [feɪbo]) is a chain of Dutch walk-up fast food restaurants of the automatiek type. Founded in 1941 in Amsterdam, FEBO is most notable for this automatiek format: a counter is available for purchasing French fries, beverages, and hamburgers. Other FEBO snacks can be bought from the automats. The primary automat-vended items are krokets, frikandellen, hamburgers, "cheese soufflés" and such.
According to the company website [1], FEBO has almost 60 shops all over the Netherlands, with 54 being franchises [2]. There are 22 shops in Amsterdam alone.
Originally a bakery named "Maison FEBO" after Ferdinand Bolstraat in Amsterdam, where the founder was an apprentice baker, the name was later shortened to just "FEBO"."
try FEBO if ur a gambling man

Febo's awesome.

The frikadel's are my favourite:

Edit: Just translated the ingredients for the frikadel:
50% rundergehakt, 50% pig varkensgehakt, kruiden, dried vegetables, potato flakes and violence in soup.
I'm not overly worried about the what the ingredients are that didn't get translated but wtf is 'Violence in soup' ?

Dont avoid the Canals.. Some great hidden coffeeshops in the Canals..
Avoid going off the grid to areas that dont look right. Get a good map, and stay on it..
