Train tickets set to rise sharply in price

Train tickets set to rise sharply in price
28 April 2009

Train tickets will become much more expensive next year following railway operator ProRail's decision to increase its charges by 17%, the Volkskrant quotes Dutch Rail (NS) as saying on Tuesday.

The NS said the planned increase in fees to use the tracks is 'absurd' and that it plans to complain to the competition authority NMa.

This year, NS is paying €175m to use the railway tracks. Next year that will go up by €30m. ProRail also gets some €2bn a year from the treasury.

ProRail said the increase was due to the more 'business-like' approach within the railway sector. 'It is a stimulus to users to look critically at which services they want to buy in,' a spokesman said.

NS and ProRail are both 100% state-owned companies.

I meant to say almost 10 Euro. I could have sworn that tickets to CS from Schiphol were just under 8 dollars right now. If they've always been 3,90 then either I've been smoking waay too much weed, or it's been waaay too long since my last trip! For the record, it's been 15 months.

A single to Central Station from Schiphol costs €3.90 add the 17% and that works out to €4.56 so I'd say they'll go up to €4.60

Even at boners price, its pennys! i paid the 3.70 for a non-stop, intercity train from schip to ams centraal!!! now just look at the equivelent for the gatwick express(£16.90) or the heathrow express(£16.50) to london!!!
its a fuc*in joke!

so, 17% is jack to me (and any other londoner)!!!

Well I guess it's just been too long for me then. Thankfully, I'll be back in 9 days. I can hardly wait.

Rough one! back in 2002 it was only like 1.70 or something, last year it was 4 euros so 5-6 euros will be the going rate next time i think 8).
