This is a KEBAB... (think cuts of tender lamb, pork, veal or chicken).
Image

This is a GYROS...(same as a Donner, except real Donner's are made with hamburger meat and spices, whereas Gyros are the scrap meat that even Greeks won't eat).
Image

A real Donner also has a rich sauce which is similar to greek tzatziki but thinner and not as strong. A quality Donner is served with the sauce already on it, whereas gyros the consumer generally applies the tzatziki.

And both of them look mighty tasty, TwoCanucks!

Over here in the UK, typically the top one would be qualified as a Shish Kebab (or for me, a starter!!), and the second offering would be known as a Donner Kebab...

We're a little less sophisticated here in Blighty (- or at least, I am) and generically call most things that can be stuffed into either pita or naan bread, covered with greenery (blech!) and smothered in sauce, a kebab.

If it can be handheld at the end of a night of drinking and consumed without (instantly) barfing, then it's a result!

I'm fascinated by the range of different meats that are used by different countries to make up these marvellous munchies though...

I'm sure if they even started using class G chicken face meat (whaddayoumean started??!!??), they would still be as popular!

I got all inspired and decided to look it up on Wikipedia!

....Döner kebab (Turkish: döner kebap or döner kebabı, literally "rotating roast", often abbreviated as döner, also spelled 'donair', 'doner' or sometimes 'donner') is a Turkish dish made of lamb meat cooked on a vertical spit and sliced off to order. In Arabic, it is called shawarma, and in Greek gyros. In English, the term kebab in some countries refers specifically to döner kebab.

There are many variants in the composition of the meat, the ways of serving it, and the garnishes....

Damn - I should take a degree course in this stuff!!

Yes, got to second Maroush. Fabulous Lamb Shwarma (with special sauce ) for I think £2.50 last time I was there. Best kebabs I've ever eaten, and cheaper than your usual post piss-up shithole too. Had a couple of sit-down meals in there as well, and it's all good. They do a fantastic fruit smoothie too. Always make a point of stopping in there when I'm in the smoke (and Ed's too if I get a chance).

Bing bing bing... we have a correct answer here!

shwarma = gyro = donar kebab.
(In North America, though some folks unfamiliar with kebab, typically refer kebab to only one type of kebab, the shish kebab. )

Wrong, wrong wrong...

A doner is made from Minced Lamb, and is much lower quality.

A Shwarma is made from pieces of meat: http://gfishoutofwater.files.wordpress. ... rma201.jpg

A good rule of thumb when buying one of these under whichever name is to look at the grills. If the grill is turned to a low heat, a long way away from the meat then they are selling the product much slower than if the grill is close to the meat and hot... you want fresh
