Building up to the Champions League final between Manchester United and Barcelona, alot of the attention was on Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's personal duel to become the Worlds Best Player...............

Being a Liverpool fan i think it would be very biased to say Steven Gerrard is the best player in the world, i mean the guy can play in virtually any position and do a very good job, he scores, creates, defends, is good in the air and has a work rate second to none.
I voted for Xavi from Barcelona, he is very much like Gerrard, watching him in the Euro's (which Spain won), he was voted player of the Tournement, and throughout this season his form has been second to none. He scores great goals, but his eye for a perfect pass/throughball beats anything any other midfielder in the world can do. And as for the other part of being a central midfielder, tackling, he gets back quickly and takes so much pressure of defenses with his good positioning,
Did you see Messi's goal in the final.... was all Xavi, he put that ball on 5ft tall Messi's head like it was as easy. Quality and if not Gerrard i hope Xavi is voted European Player of the Year 2009

im not sure i agree that gerrard is the best in the world but then again this is all a matter of opinion. gerrard sure is enjoying his football atm though. hes been in superb form this season. i will say that imo hes got the best combination of talent and leadership qualities. leadership imo is quite important in football. one of the big reasons(besides being outplayed of course) united didn't win the cl final on wednesday was the lack of a true leader. something we haven't had since keane.
educating myself and waiting for the next trip.

I may be wrong, but I don't think a defender has ever won the world player of the year award? Generally it goes to people who score or create a lot of goals.
I voted for Messi in the list, although Xavi has had a fantastic season. I think Gerrard has had better seasons than he has this year, he has been more consistent in the past, Ronaldo isn't in it because he had too much time out injured, Ronaldinhino - That was a joke right? I mean, he is awful this year at Milan, and regretting his decision no doubt. Apparently he is going to be off to Man City next year with Elano going in the opposite direction? Again this was from a Man City fan the other day, don't really hear English transfer speculation out here.
Xavi is excellent all round, but I just don't think his name is mentioned enough around the world and outside of spain to get him recognised for the world honour. It's going to be interesting for sure, this year there are many potential winners, but I think it will come from outside of Ronaldo, Ronaldinhino, Messi and Kaka. I don't think either of those guys are going to win it this year.

Almost every bar that has a TV!!Dambuster wrote:soulrider, do u know where I could watch the england v andorra game on 10th june in amsterdam apart from stones cafe?
Seriously, it will be on loads of bars, at least 3 in warmoestraat besides Stones cafe, and then as you move out it just goes on. I don't often watch football in the pubs, but there are always loads showing the games, in fact, it's probably easier to watch the England games than it is the Dutch ones!!
I normally chill in a coffeeshop, or pop back to the Meeting POint Hostel, because they get the Big Screen out every now and again. If you go to Leidseplein there will be about 15 bars around the square showing the game, at least there was on saturday for the FA cup final...
