As for Defenders winning Player of the year awards, i think defenders are much more reconnised these days. Nemanja Vidic won Premier League Player of the Year this year, John Terry has won the PFA and Writers award in England, and i remember the German Matias Sammer winning the European (Balon D'Or) in around 1997. And Fabio Cannavaro did win World player when Captaining Italy to the world cup. But the best players are always the ones that "make things happen" and Xavi is the best at that for me.
Cantona7, you are right about not having a leader, some1 thats other players would be scared to let down, like Roy Keane. i think its time for Rio Ferdinand to step up and be counted and show his leadership qualities, only problem is his growing fitness and back problems!!
