hey guys,

ive been reading the forum for a while now, and u lot really inspired me to sample the "Pleasures" of dam....so me and 5 mates have booked to go there for the 14-16th of july. We're staying at the meeting place hostel.

i was just wondering on any info about the hostel itself, and surroundin coffeeshops. i know lacanna is near ther and siberie, i was just wondering if there was anymore around the hostel. ALso iv been told that Dam is a relavitly safe area at night, but will the fact that were gna be staying near the RLD be a problem.

I think a read of this will maximize your efficiency once you get there.

How not to get hit by a bike and other stuff they forgot to tell you about Amsterdam.

You will be at coffeeshop ground zero. They will be all around you.

There is nothing wrong with the RLD. Have a little street smarts and you will be fine.

La Canna is, fortunately, closed, but as Mr Oranje has pointed out, the coffeeshops are everywhere in that part of town. Check out the map;

This second one shows all the city centre coffeeshops, but as numbered icons only. You can click on them to take you to the info page or if you have the status bar at the bottom of the window activated it'll show you the link name as you hover the cursor over the icon. Helps when you're trying to navigate your way around the scores of coffeeshops in that tiny area.

As for the RLD, don't be too dumb, don't flash cash, don't take pictures and if anyone standing on a corner mutters something to you as you walk past, just say 'no, thanks'.

do you guys have any recomenations to what the best coffeeshops that are in the close vicinity of the hostel?

and also how long is the walk say to the haamlerstraat from where we would be (i really wana go barneys and dampkring)

within the website that FlyByNite mentions there is a section entitled How not to get hit by a bike

imho this is an absolutely essential document to read before you arrive in amsterdam as a first time visitor, the traffic is nuts and this document will help keep you safe, so please read, thanks

i hope you have a great trip to amsterdam ...

ps i have found that everywhere in the center is walkable for a fit person, so if you are close to siberie you are close to haarlemerstraat and barneys/dampkring2

walking around gives you a chance to see amsterdam and it is a wonderful city to visit

If your staying at the Metting Point you have so many coffeeshops around you, the street that your hostel is on has around 10 coffeeshops. But branch out to places like Mellow Yellow, Paradox, Basjoe's and even ones off the main map (which i unfortunately never got to) like Media and Katsu are considered great shops. And as for safety, your more likely to be smashed from behind by a cyclist then have trouble around the RLD.
