Headwear etiquette in Amsterdam
I've seen it mentioned a few times here and there but I wanted to ask to make sure. What is the proper etiquette for wearing hats in Amsterdam? I wear a baseball cap pretty much 24/7. Am I expected to remove it upon entering coffeeshops, restaurants, museums, etc.?
Around here, you can wear a hat any where and at any time without anyone even noticing. Honestly, it doesn't bother me at all to remove it. I just wanted to hear from people that live in the 'dam, and have made multiple visits, as to what is expected of me whilst wearing it.

Hmm...that's pretty much what I figured. I didn't even consider the security issue. It's like at my local bank where they instruct customers that they don't know to remove their hats and sunglasses. Makes sense *nodding*.
I was just curious. Like I said, it's not a bother at all to remove it...it's just just somewhat annoying to have to carry it around inside...lol *shrug*.
Thank you for the replies, gentleman *bows*.

I went to about 20 shops when I was there and only was asked to take my hat off twice. The Rokerij III was one of them (1st place I went to the entire trip) and another one that I was so stoned I cant even begin to fathom what the name was or the location or if it was even in Amsterdam for that matter lol.. yes as you can tell I had a great time in the Dam!
"Im jus twistin my blunt Im gettin high!"
Dampkring 2 is very strict on both those items as when i was in line once, the budtender told quite a few people to take their sunglasses off and said it was for their own security and the ease of the other customers...which i 100% agree with. There is no need at all for people to wear sunglasses in a coffeeshop, when many of them are darker lit than most shops anyway, and like others have said it is just courtesy to the hosts.FenixNYC wrote:My friend was told to take off his hat and sunglasses in Dampkring 2.
Baffling at the time but made perfect sense after the bald budtender explained the security reasoning behind it.

Hats in CS's
In 2004 or 2005 I started seeing signs showing baseball caps with the familiar red circle and stroke. I kind of wondered why but didn't pay much attention. I usually remove my hat indoors, but not always. If someone asked I removed it cheerfully, though nobody ever asked. One happy "arrival in A'dam day" I went to the Albus Grand Hotel and got my wife settled in. I went around the corner to the Rokerij to get her something to help her sleep off jet lag. Some young punk decided he wouldn't ask or be polite about it, he told me in a manner rather rude using vulgar words of language to remove my hat. I looked at him for a second, and told him he had just cost his employer a whole bunch of money. He made some quick excuse about gang members or some nonsense while looking at the woman at the back of the room. I asked him how many gang members are Americans in their late fifties with grey hair. I left. I went outside and up the street a bit trying to figure out the nearest shop to get some weed. I looked back and saw the woman standing in the doorway waving to me, but I wasn't interested. She should have spoken sooner.
I won't spend a sou in the Rokerij, nor will I darken their door.
