March 21-24 2016

Post by Polanket »

Hello Everyone!! :D

I will be going to Amsterdam this March with my girlfriend and I would really apreciate it if you guys could help me out a bit. It is our first time in Amsterdam and we have no idea how to get started in the coffee shop scene.

It will be my girlfriend's first time smoking so I was hoping you could recommend some friendly, chill places were she can feel relaxed.
It is also my first time at a coffee shop so I could also use some tips to not come across as the typical tourist.

Thank you all for your help!! and if there are any other recommendations you can give me (about interesting spots) I would love to hear them.

You have been posted on the March Whos In Town page.
Scroll down to your month and click it.

You can see who else may be in town during your stay.

If you don't see yourself, click your refresh or reload button
Your browser sometimes loads pages from your local cache and
you don't get the latest update.

Watch for Toke & Talks, I post them up to the last minute.

Set yourself up with your own T&T or Toke and Talk, where you pick the coffeeshop
(your favorite) and the date and time, I will post it and you wait for folks to
show up, if they do you'll have a T&T. If they don't you still get to enjoy your
favorite coffeeshop!

Use ACD's map - https://www.coffeeshopdirect.com/map-ams.html

By default I link your posting to your profile page here on ACD.

I can change it to a web link ( myspace, facebook, personal page )
or an email address if you want.

You can do a little practice shopping on the Coffeeshop Menus page.
Any with arrows are less than six months old.

Any nice new menu pictures you can get will be much appreciated.
Always ask first, better told no than thrown out.

First timers get my S G Collins recommendation
I think a read of this will maximize your efficiency once you get there.

How not to get hit by a bike and other stuff they forgot to tell you about Amsterdam.

Enjoy

Hi there - welcome to the forum! FBN's post above should help you get started. There are plenty of tourist guides to Amsterdam so I prefer to stick to coffeeshop advice :) I wrote something up for another new member last week which you can find here viewtopic.php?f=2&t=31749&p=390417&sid= ... 36#p390417

Don't worry about looking like a tourist - you certainly will not be the only one. The CS scene is FULL of tourists mainly.

OneHighMofo's CS etiquette guide...

1. Be polite and say hello when entering any establishment - the Dutch are big on this particular piece of etiquette. It will stand you in very good stead all over town

2. Take your hat off if you're wearing one - it's frowned upon in some CS's

3. Don't take calls on your phone - it's also frowned upon in some CS's (even more so lately it seems) - personally it's something I welcome but I have noticed other tourists feeling unhappy about being told to get off the phone.

4. If it's important to you to examine every strain in the tubs before buying - wait for an opportune moment. If there's a huge queue the bud tender might not want to take the time to show you everything. Sometimes they will - sometimes they won't. Best to err on the side of caution.

5. Be sure to ask if it's ok first if you want to only smoke gear you bought somewhere else - some shops are funny about this but I've largely noticed that it's very much based on the customer. Large groups (especially of young people) are going to be expected to buy something if they're all taking up space in the shop. However smartly dressed couples that ask first and just want a coffee and a sit down - I'd doubt you'll have any trouble.

6. If you're rolling with Tobacco - be very discreet, or use the purpose built smoking rooms. My advice? Roll pure - it's the only way to smoke :)

My favourite girlfriend friendly CS's are Katsu, De Graal, Club Media, Mr K, Paradox, Tertulia.

Have fun! And leave us a trip report please :)
