coffeeshops w/ minimal tourist presence
Is there a thread highlighting 'local' AMS coffeeshops?
The kind where the only tourist is the one that found it by mistake.
For a change of scenery, I'd like to visit a couple of 'local' shops.
Any recommendations?

My go to "non tourist" shops are Solo, Paradox, and De Graal. I'm sure others can recommend shops that are even farther off the map.

A good class of visitor there craig, me and the Mrs love it
.
To the question, Ijmuiden is a 15 minute fast ferry down the Ij and I really liked both CS's there, Joe Cools is........cool. Then there are a couple in Zandaam which looks on the map to be a 10 minute train ride although I haven't been there.
. Let us know if you go.
I thought the first rule if you found an unspoiled habitat was to keep quiet about it
. Happy hunting

My personal favorite Haarlem shop is Birdy.

Paradox in my experience is the most local oriented shop. after that i'd say de graal and papillon

Same here Spider we love it, maybe not the greatest of products in that shop, but for a "local feel" its top notch, plus get a seat on the second floor over looking the Prinsengracht, its hard to whackspidergawd wrote:A good class of visitor there craig, me and the Mrs love it

The farther away from the center, the more chance of finding a locals shop.
Go out beyond Singelgracht (not to be confused with Singel), there are many shops to discover in the outer areas.
When you find that special spot, keep it to yourself because the next time you go, it might not be so special. Just saying...
This is why I don't have any recommendations...

I prefer to patronize the local shops on the assumption that the quality & price may be a little better.
And occasionally the sounds of tourism & commerce get too loud & hectic.
Just like restaurants & bars change personalities & fall out of favor, I can't expect permanence. A lot can happen in six months haha!
Thanks everyone. Now will have to work a bike plan.
Amazing how what little sense of direction I have can be obliterated in a toke.

Paradox was one of the highlights of my trip, as well 1e hulp, mellow yellow, and rookies were all good. I probably spent the most time at rookies simply because it was right next to my hostel and they serve great apple and chocolate pie to eat while you're smoking.
On the other end of the spectrum, green place was crazy busy.

Hop on the free ferry behind centraal station, there are a few places over in the north worth looking at, plus it is very pretty and green. I can also thoroughly reccomend FlyByNite's suggestion to visit Haarlem, there are some brilliant shops, plus the town itself is just a pleasure to explore. Nothing like a midmorning coffee on the Grote Markt watching the Haarlem locals going about their daily business in the lively market
At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them

Re: coffeeshops w/ minimal tourist presence
This is Amsterdam; all shops will have some tourists coming in as people rent apartments and hotels all over the city. The more "locals" shops tend to be away from the center. A little on the edge is De Hulp. Nice shop, mainly with locals. Further out Katsu, another good shop frequented by locals.
Rent a car or hop on a train and go to shops in other towns if you want a pure Dutch atmosphere. I've driven around many parts of Holland and usually found the local shops warm and welcoming. The weed tends to be much cheaper; though I've never found a better selection than at the connoisseur shops in the Dam (Barney's, Grey Area, Voyagers, Greenhouse etc.). The smaller local shops tend to have fewer and more standard selections. Better for saving money, not sampling the best Holland has to offer. Just my experience after 8 trips.
