So why no MMJ in England?
Seeing as though not so long ago we were in the back pocket of America why have we not followed the lead they have made with weed laws?!

mmmmmm how long have you got?munkyboy2k wrote:Seeing as though not so long ago we were in the back pocket of America why have we not followed the lead they have made with weed laws?!
In no particular order:
media fuelled moral panics
spineless weak politicians
misinformed public
fear of rampant criminality
UK binge culture
Britain is already broken
the list is endless, I will stop there.
With the current policy emphasis on making legal highs illegal I cannot see reform of weed laws nor the Misuse of Drugs Act more generally being vastly amended/repealed. This is despite the fact that traditionally alcohol was seen to be morally wrong and a threat to social well being, not drugs, and of course the opium trade between GB, China and India was extremely profitable in the 19th C .
Rant over
All that being said we must maintain some sense of hope that common sense and enlightened public support will prevail.
You see the point is that many people believe that marijuana for medical use is and I quote the 'trojan horse' which brings all the other 'arguments' into play, that is why I see some kind of reform a long way away.

I thought it was individual states that were making these laws, not the Federal Govt.munkyboy2k wrote:Seeing as though not so long ago we were in the back pocket of America why have we not followed the lead they have made with weed laws?!
Anyhoo in the UK:
the Daily Mail won't let them (it's a dangerous drug, dontcha know);
big Pharma won't let them (no mega profits);
doctors won't let them (they want a monopoly of control for all medicines);
it might actually work (the is Britain godammit).
Besides, whilst I sympathise for those in need of MMJ, I would prefer it if the
weed was made legal on its own merits (or rather lack of dismerits), rather than needing to use medicinal purposes as an excuse.
Just imo of course.
