Thanks very much for this HitTheNorth, I’ve never seen this video before! The upstairs at Pink Floyd was so much more spacious than what Dampkring did with it when they took over in 2007.

By the way is that a mother fucking grow room   next to the toilets at 45 seconds??? A grow room inside a Coffeeshop! Fucking amazing 8) 8) 8)

Here’s some photos I found on an old Pink Floyd forum. I think they're early 90s

Amazing photos. It really was a work of art, it's a travesty what it's ended up like, hence why I couldn't bring myself to go back in.

Same with Noon - just how I remember it. Like a Bedoin tent.

Cushions on seats! Imagine that now!

Love these. Anyone know the name of the coffeeshop at 2.46? I love their door policy - over 18s only "and don't fuck around"

free_phil_spector wrote: Tue 12th Aug 2025 03:25 pm Nice thread. I can add two I visited in the late 90s, both on Nieuwendijk...

Blues Brothers. Bar on ground floor serving drinks (almost certain this included alcohol but distant memories and all that). We spent an afternoon chilling in here and it was very nice. We bought hash from the budtender located upstairs and then plotted up on some bar stools downstairs where we spent an enjoyable couple of hours drinking (beers?), smoking hash, chatting with the bartender and listening to some excellent 60s/70s rock. A fine time. The bar itself wasn't Blues Brothers themed but I'm damn certain (with no evidence other than my dodgy memory) that the toilet was decked out in the graffiti advertising the Blues Brothers show which you see in a toilet in the movie (if that makes sense).

La Canna. Polar opposite of BB. Large, loud, brash and just all a bit too 'America pool hall' for me. It was three storeys! Don't think I ever bought weed in there but it was so stand-out noticeable on that street that we popped in a couple of times to rest our aching legs, grab a beer and smoke some pot. A nothing place really, but I guess kind of handy in its own way.

I loved Blues Brothers Coffeeshop. Could smoke your own stash very easily if you could get a seat downstairs.

I remember sitting downstairs at the back of the shop one morning watching cartoons on the telly on my first trip. I also liked sitting at the front window on the stools, people watching. It was a great location.

I was gutted when I found it closed as it wasn't on the school closure list or the red light closure list, so I presume the council just didn't renew their licence so they could get rid of another coffeeshop on Nieuwendijk. It turned into a crappy pasta place. No idea what it is now.

Here’s a photo of a very run down looking Blues Brothers Coffeeshop in the mid 90s

From around 23.40 possibly Big Fun coffeeshop. It's certainly representative of a typical coffeeshop back in 1993

Great video that is HTN. Love that they have Mushroom Tea on the menu   anyone know what year mushrooms were banned from being sold in coffeeshops?

We wandered past and popped in for a pint, only for the Barman to start pulling deals out of his bumbag! Massive red flags, but we neither knew nor cared. Closed within a few months of our visit I believe.

Pure speculation here...
Perhaps they chose alcohol over weed when the time came it was one or the other. But carried on knocking it out under the counter. Got rumbled and shut down?

Really enjoyed watching through these videos this afternoon. Mixed emotions. It was great to reminisce about those places but also made me sad to recall what we've lost. It's so easy now to forget just how many coffeeshops there were and how long some of them had been part of the fabric of Amsterdam. It's a snapshot of a world that no longer exists. Nothing lasts forever and it was inevitable that Amsterdam as it was in the 80s, 90s and 00s would never last but I feel privileged to have been around to experience it. What a fantastic time to be alive that was.
