This is my local shop. John and Harry have owned the place for 20plus years. IMO Katsu has the best local vibe of any coffeeshop in Amsterdam. The local scene is very cool and all the regs have their own stories. One of the nicest things about the Katsu is that they treat visitors like locals. Everyone feels at home at Katsu. There is now a bench out front(because of the new smoking laws) and rumor has it that a awning(overhang) will be added for the smokers when it rains. Katsu has terrace rights in front of the shop but have never done much with it. That will change next summer. Sitting out front of Katsu is one of my favorite ways to spend a couple hours. It is a great people watching place.

also one of the best falafels across from Katsu as well as many other nice places for a drink or a bite. regarding those terrace rights - can they put out tables and chairs and have people smoking there?

My apartment is just round the corner from Eerste van der Helststraat by the Gerard Douplein and have to agree with MH that it is a great place for people watching, the street must be 50% bars and cafes with seating outside now, it would be fantastic if you could sit outside Katsu for a smoke

Just walked back thru there with my daughter and the whole street was buzzing, great atmosphere

Totally agree with you, really friendly people who work in there - There is a picture on the wall of the guy with the long black hair in a ponytail sent back by two Norwegian tourists that says "this guy makes the best Vlaamse frites in the Nederlands"

And it's true :)

Of course you can. We do it all week long. There is a nice bench there now and you are welcome to grab some stools from inside and make a nice place outside. Katsu has the terrace rights. Look for something new next summer.

it was a fellow forum member that turned me on to De Pijp and I try to get there whenever in town - you will love this area - very local and different from the Centrum.

Yup, nice area for sure. Never thought about staying there until I joined the forum. My top pick. Quiet too.
