A New Three Favourite Coffeeshops Poll

Post by Lemming »

Your 3 Favourite Coffeeshops

We've been talking about this for some time. Unlike our previous polls, you can change your mind in this one and some shops actually have fewer votes now than earlier even though the total number of votes has grown. Nevertheless, the current poll has been running for well over a year and the list could be refreshed. It's probably time to freeze the current poll and start a new one.

At the moment the maximum number of items in a poll is 50. I think there might be a way to get around this and, therefore, put all of the coffeeshops in the Netherlands into a single poll. Such a large number could become unwieldy, though.

The other alternative is to keep a list of 50 but to drop a few of the least popular shops and replace them with new nominees.

For instance, we could drop Baba, Coffeeshop 36, The Old Church and Rick's Café. As the Rokerij chain has closed we could remove them too. Sanementereng has also closed but some say it will return so we could keep it.

Candidates for replacements might include 1e Hulp, Rusland and Boerejongens/Bij.

What do you think?

I was goin to vote 1e Hulp for a long time now, and I like Bij altho I found 3 seeds in last week's bag of Herijuana from there... :o

great idea Lemming, may I also suggest introducing some popular non-Dam shops too?! (eg. Birdy an' WWs in Haarlem) or maybe those would require a separate poll?!

cheers :)

Seems a bit like herding cats, as the shops and our preferences are always changing.

It all sounds good, but make way for Utopia.

Utopia is a very good point!

We'll certainly never keep everyone happy but I think we can include most people's favourites.

Non-Dam shops are awkward. Haarlem is special both because it's close to Amsterdam and because it's long served as a sort of alternative Amsterdam. In towns further away the shops serve a different market and can't really be compared directly with Amsterdam shops. I think it would be difficult to incorporate a few non-Dam shops in a top 50 poll.

We could have separate polls for each town but only a few places have more than a handful of shops. A poll of Haarlem shops might be interesting, I suppose, but then again all of the shops there are good. Otherwise, as I suggested before, we could have a single poll covering all 700 or so shops in the Netherlands, that would ensure that nobody's favourite was excluded.

• Favorite full-service Amsterdam coffeeshops

• Favorite buy and fly Amsterdam coffeeshops

Not much ambiance with the buy and fly shops, and that matters to some. Olde Basjoe, for example. Full-service shops are meeting places. Never heard of a TnT at a BnF.

• Favorite NL coffeeshops outside Amsterdam.

It's called the Amsterdam Coffeeshop Directory for a reason, ja? The shops listed outside Amsterdam are a bonus, imo.

Still, a nice compilation. What would we do without it?

My compliments to the Chef! Thanks Lemming.

Can we have two (2) polls?

I'd like one that captures ALL history and one that is current as things change! So I'm thinking a annual or biannual updated calendar on the second to reflect changing conditions - no more Rokerij (:-<). a Utopia on the rise, Basjoe evolving, changes of ownership Dampkring 2 and Tweede Kamer!

Hopefully the Wietpas won't make future polls unnecessary.

Just in case sanity does not prevail; put your memories on to the media of your choice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The old poll will always be in the archive. The best and worst polls that preceded the current one are still available:

So, based on comments here, I'm thinking drop Baba (no votes), The Old Church (1 vote), Rick's Café (1 vote) and Rokerij chain (closed) and replace with 1e Hulp, Rusland, Boerejongens/Bij and Utopia.

Does that sound like a plan?

Hey Lemming... you can also remove Sanementereng since I believe it is closed for a while now. Room for one more!
