ACD Forum's 4/20 Gathering 2025

Post by Lemming »

In the days before we set off, the weather forecasts are all over the place. Pressure maps show a small island of high pressure over Amsterdam with several lows spinning around it. This should indicate good weather in North Holland and messier stuff all around but a tiny change in this complex pattern would shift the sunshine elsewhere and bring the rain to Amsterdam.

Well, spoiler alert, the weather in Amsterdam is indeed fantastic and the rain falls on the UK. A small downside in this for me is a bit of hay fever, probably exacerbated by excessive cannabis consumption :D . The occasional sneeze doesn't slow me down but it's slightly embarrassing and I'm conscious that people might think I'm afflicted with some infectious disease.

On with the story ...

Thursday 17th April 2025 - Arrival

Our flight is only slightly delayed and we're soon descending over the colourful springtime fields of the Netherlands. Flying over Voorhout, looking towards Keukenhof and Lisse, our pilot organises some perfect views for us.

Image

Having flown into Amsterdam many times over nearly four decades and taking countless pictures through plane windows, I think this is the best shot I've ever got of the bulb fields.

On arrival at Centraal station, we first pop into the GVB shop to grab some paper 6-day tickets for the trams, metros and night busses. Previous experience tells us that the phone-based versions of these tickets are a pain so paper is the way to go.

Tickets in hand, we descend to the metro and catch an M52 to Vijzelgracht station by the Weteringcircuit where our subterranean hotel room awaits. A brief stop in the burrow to drop off our stuff and then we re-emerge at the surface, cross to the metro, back underground again and make our way towards Siberië, where Bedge has arranged for everyone to meet.

Incoming messages though the day have told of various members landing from around the world. A few made it to the dab session at Bushdocter earlier. Hopefully we'll have a good turnout this evening.

Our destination is in the middle of this picture, with the lights outside.

Image

Siberië is on the pretty Brouwersgracht, which is popular with the monstrous floating polytunnels.

Anyway, enough of this tourist stuff, let's get into the coffeeshop and get the Mighty loaded!

Inside, we immediately recognise a bunch of familiar faces. There are some serious veterans of many a 4-20 campaign here who Igraine and I already know well. Lots of warm greetings all around. Overall, including one early retirement and a couple of later arrivals, we have AzLaker, Bedge, Gapie, Ghost, Jamie Dodger, Stevesec, Talkrum and Trad. Jamie Dodger is the first 420 virgin I meet this year. A fine gentleman, as we would expect of a Bedge progeny.

Time to load the vape. A quick visit to the counter yields some Monaco Octane and Lemon Cherry Gelato. The MO seemed to hit fast with a nice buzz. After that, one strain merges with the next, to be honest. We are soon flying. It's great to be back in Amsterdam!

Ghost breaks out an amazing assortment of beautiful goodies, which he then distributes around everyone present. These are sure to become instant classics, rarities to be sought out by discerning collectors around the world. There are amazing T-shirts, keyrings featuring ACD maps, fridge magnets featuring coffeeshop pictures [Het Ballonnetje and Pink Floyd now decorate my kitchen] and lovely little ACD pin badges, which we all wear with pride.

Having blown us all away with gifts, Ghost now proceeds to blow our heads off with a very efficient portable rosin vape. What a wonderful man!

Siberië is definitely up there with the best coffeeshops in the 'Dam but, after nearly three hours of heavy consumption, many of us are thirsting for a beer to lubricate our smoky throats. A short walk around the corner takes us to the nearest weed-friendly bar, CoffeeshopAmsterdam Café.

As we walk in we're greeted by a member of staff. I tell them we're looking to smoke weed and drink beer. We don't sell weed, they say but, when I tell them we already have plenty, they say in that case we're welcome and guide us downstairs where there are ashtrays on all of the tables. Drinks orders are taken and a tray full of large beers soon appears. After such a heavy smoking and vaping session, Heineken has never tasted so good! Suitably refreshed, the session soon resumes at full tilt.

Meanwhile, as we're moving from Siberië to the bar, Sammysarahh is trying to catch up with us. Trying to explain where we are is a challenge. CoffeeshopAmsterdam is a stupid name for a coffeeshop. It's an even more ridiculous name for a bar! She soon finds us though.

Image
Gapie and Trad are already getting competitive

After lots more weed and lager, we're ready for some munchies to finish off the evening. Igraine and I lead a small group across to the Red Light District in search of chips (friet, fries).

It's a successful mission in that we score the desired chips and mayo but our favourite location to consume them is still missing. I thought I read somewhere that the nice footbridge across Oudezijds Voorburgwal had been rebuilt but it clearly hasn't.

Image

In this picture we see the unused abutments of the missing bridge. Older readers might recognise what was once The Other Place coffeeshop on the opposite side. Emerging from the door between there and the Caligula sex shop is what looks like an Al Capone-style American gangster with a machine gun.

Without our bridge, we're forced to eat on the canalside outside Bulldog Hotel. From there we stroll around the corner to the bus stop on the Damrak where an N85 nightbus promptly rolls up. Sammysarahh and Trad join us as far as Prinsengracht and we continue to Frederiksplein.

So ends a fantastic first night. De Kade tomorrow...

I'm going to sit back and patiently wait on this trip report. I can't wait to find out after a month who won the pinball match at Spirit this year so please don't spoil the reveal. I've already found my Air B and B for next year in a houseboat near The Spirit with a smoking porch attached...11 months to go to next 4-20
Someone asked me to describe a perfect date. I said April 25th: it's not too cold and not too hot.

Friday 18th April 2025 - De Kade

Our basement hotel room has a window near its ceiling with a view of passing feet. The bustling Heineken junction is just outside and the window is single glazed and loose fitting. It's noisy! Despite this, we sleep remarkably well. Igraine just removed her hearing aids, I can sleep through thunder storms and, anyway, we were zonked when we retired last night!

The schedule has us doing De Kade at 2pm. That was my suggestion after struggling to make earlier meets in previous years after a first-night-in-Amsterdam session. As it happens, we now have time for a very relaxed breakfast, which is good.

We haven't stayed around here before so we go out to explore the options. First we try the trendy Bakers & Roasters just behind the hotel but it's very busy so we carry on looking around the Albert Cuyp market. Somehow we get as far as Ceintuurbaan without finding anything we fancy so we catch a tram back to Marie Heinekenplein, pop into the hotel and then take a metro into the centre. Once there we head to Il Panorama, behind the Royal Palace, where we successfully stuff our faces.

Messages from Ghost indicate that people are gathering in Het Gelderse so, once fed, we head out into the sunshine and stroll across Dam Square where we spot this vintage tram trundling along the little-used line beside the palace.

Image

A little further on we meet Bedge and Jamie Dodger near the Old Church. The four of us continue on towards Gelderse.

Image
The seating behind King's Cross and Stones Café looks cosy in the sunshine

That brings us to Het Gelderse, where we catch up with the others.

With the expeditionary force assembled, we set off for Centraal Station.

There are several entrances into the metro around the station area. We descend one of them and into confusion. We want a 52 metro on the newish north-south line. The sign says all four lines are here but when we get to the bottom we find only the terminus platforms for the older lines. Must've gone the wrong way. Back up, search around. Nope. There's only this one way down to all lines. Back down again and eventually find the way to M52 at the far end of the platform.

Having found the right platform, we're soon on a train heading south. Minutes later we're emerging into the daylight and arriving at Amsterdam Zuid station.

My route from the station to De Kade is to exit on the north side onto Zuidplein, across the square and underneath the big road. Turn left and continue until passing under another big road. On the other side, a café is visible to the right. We walk towards the café and turn left in front of it. That brings us to here:

Image
Our jolly little band on Fred. Roeskestraat

At the end of these apartment blocks, some water comes up on the right. We turn right just before the water onto Dirk Schäferstraat. Continue along here until walking alongside the water and a little bridge appears.

Bedge, Jamie Dodger and Igraine pause on the bridge.

De Kade is on the right edge of this picture

Across the bridge we turn left and De Kade is just across the road.

Inside we gather ourselves around three little tables and all of the kit comes out. A serious session is soon in progress. De Kade's Jasmin comes over to introduce herself.

Image

Jasmin kindly produces some tasty goodies for us to sample.

Image

She then unfurls their events banner to show us.

Image

Despite De Kade being well out of the centre, we've managed to get a dozen of us out here, which is quite an achievement. There's AzLaker, BatRadia, Bedge, Gapie, Ghost, Igraine, Jamie Dodger, Kushola, Lemming, Professoref, Talkrum and Trad here.

The sun is streaming in through the windows and we're getting nicely comfortable. Life is very good. We're settled in for the afternoon. I've got a Volcano.

Image

It's about four hours later when we step outside again.

Some of the crew lead off down the road while I bring up the rear to herd any stray cats. Then I realise the lead group have passed the turning for the bridge and are disappearing off into the distance. At the end of the road they stop and we catch up. Now we're much closer to the no.24 tram stop than the station so we head that way instead.

Tram 24 doesn't go into the centre anymore so we get off at De Pijp and switch back to the metro.

Amsterdam's metro stations are very different to London's deep tube stations. They're open and cavernous with a variety of architectural styles.

Image
Pijp metro station

We pop up at Rokin, another interesting station with lots of excavated artefacts to look at as we ascend the escalator.

The plan is to visit Café Havelaar, a weed-friendly bar that I've been wanting to check out. When we get there we find it's not open yet so we take the opportunity to look for food. Parmigiano on the first floor overlooking the Rokin canal sorts that requirement.

Back to Havelaar, which is now open. Starting downstairs in the bar, we get some beers in. Then we're invited to the upper level where we're joined by Nuggz and Sammysarahh. The table is soon covered in paraphernalia and normal behaviour resumes.

Things are getting pretty swirly now but I get one sweet picture before the world gets any more blurry.

Image

That's it. We're disappearing in a cloud of smoke and evaporating in bliss.

Utrecht tomorrow...

[As usual, apologies for the lack of bud reviews. As usual I'm too stoned to rate anything! Hopefully some of the others will fill in those blanks for you.]

Another fun installment, thanks @Lemming

How I love de Kade, such a great shop.

I have never used the metro, I only rarely use the tram, but I certainly wasn't expecting it to look like that. Cool.
