Paradise just isn't nice.
When we went in the shop was empty and we had the pick of the tables. We had enough smoke so all we wanted was 3 drinks but the barkeep said we couldn't buy drinks without buying gear. FUCKING LIBERTY!!!
Needless to say we legged it on the hurry up out of there.
Somehow I think we won't be going back.

They should sort it out. It gets so many poor reviews. They must have looked on the inet and seen the negativity

A look back: Paradise, 9/24/1996

Post by HasjDreamer »

Hey, I found the journal from my me & my wifes first trip to the dam, 9/24 - 9/29/96. Paradise was, in fact, the first coffeeshop we stepped into...EVER! So it has a bit of a special place in our hearts (even though we found quickly enough that the bags were short). Here are my first impressions recorded at the time:

"Stop #1,, the tres cool PARADISE. 10:30am & we walk into chilled reggae. The room reeks and I approach the propiertor & ask 'can I see your menu?'. Ok, now we're at the top of the first drop on that roller coaster ride! It's for real as he hands us the menu: several hashes - nepalese, afghani, & middle eastern (?). I ask & he directs us to (of course, the most expensive) SUPER AFGHANI @ 1.7 grams for 25 guilder (approx $16). The hash comes in one long sliver, removed from a file cabinet-like drawer behind the counter. It's soft, sticky, black & waxy. Gorgeous! The herb choices were super skunk, Jamaican, African, Thai, Columbian, Purple Haze, Northern Lights and our choice SILVER HAZE. Pretty but not that moist, green with red hairs and some white crystal resins. Still looking for better. 1.6g for 25fl. Results? We smoked it 1st in the bong newly purchased at the OLD MAN as salad & then with trusty backwoods (backwoods sweets cigar wraps). The wife 'unbelievable', myself 'soft squishy potent' (must have been talking about the hash)."

Of course, ANYTHING would have impressed us arriving for our first time. It NEVER seemed real until we actually were handed that first menu. Each trip we would stop in for coffee and our own stash until a couple of trips ago when we were told (for the first time at any coffeeshop) that we had to buy product in order to stay! I remember mumbling something about "that's not legal!" (lol) and storming out. We haven't been back since...

Owners are rude, hash is crap. Last time I checked their menu they had "lebanon" so I asked to see it, it was a crappy morrocan, not even smelled good. I laughed at their face and left.

I just registered, just to say that this was definitively worst coffee shop I came across in Amsterdam.
- overpriced drinks
- stoned and aggressive waiters (do these two even go together normally?)
- bad overall attitude
Never again.

obnoxious, ignorant and rude staff who have no time for tourists or often no time for customers in general. You have to buy weed to stay in and they are NOT polite about it, I intended to buy weed but needed a drink to quench my thirst desperately. I don't let people talk to me the way the guy here does so I left - the hash is all terrible value from reports i've heard. i wish this place could be taken over by decent people, it has a good location and could be an okay place.

I've always seen this coffeeshop but it looks so shady i never dared to go in. Now i have to say i'm a little intrigued it sound so bad it could actually be a fun experience....
It can't be worse than Free Adam though.

I've seen hotboxed portable toilets that are better than Free Adam. They propably smell nicer too...

i dont know why but in the last decade of going to the dam i have never once thought of entering this place.

just thought it looked tacky and the sign says it is the best and that just made me doubt it even more.

luckily i found this forum/site(a few years ago - only just joined) and it has confirmed my suspicions!

i found my travel notes from 2003...brings back haunting memories;

This place is located just off the Damrak on Damstraat among several other businesses. It really jumps right out at you with the heavy greenery in the large windows. Once inside though it's pretty much a bust. Kind of institutionalized looking with seedy looking employees. After I glanced at the high-priced menu and noticed the pre-packaged weed, I quickly withdrew from the dealer area of the bar and ordered a drink. Sat down at one of the uncomfortable tables and proceeded to roll a spliff. This was the first and only time I have received unwelcome looks from employees. Most of the time everyone is laid back, as long as you purchase something (anything) they generally don't give you a hard time. Still, I did not like the feeling of the place and quickly bolted after slamming a LOOZA and smoking the fore-mentioned spliff.

i guess some things don't change 8)
Donkey smell.

well you might think it sounds harsh, But ive nerver heard a more accurate coffeeshop review

yeah this is the coffeeshop i hated which began with a P.
right so mate was moaning to me i want hash lats go in in there, i look i dont want to go in there its got that look tacky shithole look, but he insists in there. walk in and theres loads of seats kinda looks like a cheap cafe in uk menu shows min buy 25 euros Fuck That i let mate know im not buying here. man comes over with menu coffee is 3 euros each Fuck That let my mate know im not getting a drink here. I state lets get the fuck out of this shit hole. but he orders 2.2 grams of polm something for 25 euros Fuck That. 3 coffee come over and there shit, at least i didnt pay for mine. so mate wants me to skin up so i crumble up half a gram looks alright actually, light it up and almost vomit was a horrid gagging feel then passed it to mate. so overall its a shithole absurd price and utter crap quality i would much prefer getting robed or mugged even beat up than enter here. But if your with someone you Hate tell em to go here and get the polm and a coffee.
