Hi All,
I hope you're well, I'm heading out to Amsterdam tomorrow with my wife, sister-in-law and brother-in-law to celebrate a birthday.
Me and my brother-in-law have never smoked or taken drugs so are a N00B!
Where / what would you recommend? A pre-rolled joint or a brownie?
Any advice is very much welcome.
Never smoked or taken drugs before... a N00B.

Hoping you read this in time……
DON’T HAVE A BROWNIE. If you’ve never smoked and the brownie is too strong then you will be in a shit storm for quite a few hours.
Buy a joint and have 2-3 puffs each and put it down. Sit and relax for 20 minutes and if you feel you want to be higher have another 2-3 puffs. Dont sit and smoke the whole joint and don’t eat a damn brownie. It could literally ruin your day

All good advice here - I'd also say it may be useful to have something sweet to hand - biscuits/cake/chocolate etc if you do find yourself too high, have some sugar it will bring you down a bit and don't worry - time will set you straight again. Enjoy the ride and have fun xx

Hopefully this isn’t coming too late and you’re not already curled up in the corner mid-cough attack while paramedics try to escort you out of the coffeeshop.
Maybe this doesn’t help you anymore – but if the next noob stumbles into this thread, it might.
Just wanted to add one option that hasn’t come up yet – and it’s not just for total beginners, but really for anyone who enjoys cannabis: a vaporizer. In my opinion, it’s by far the best method of consumption, whether you’re new or experienced. Many coffeeshops in Amsterdam now offer Volcano vaporizers for customer use, often free of charge. Here’s a fairly current Google Maps list:
Coffeshops with Volcano
Especially for non-smokers, starting out with a burning joint makes little sense. Not just because you risk a spectacular coughing fit, but also because combustion destroys a large portion of the terpenes and flavor compounds. What’s left is mostly smoke – harsh and one-dimensional. The effect hits fast, sure, but without any nuance. There used to be reasons to smoke – low-quality weed, no tech, no options. But today, there’s no need to burn the good stuff. And if you’re just starting out, why not experience it the way it’s meant to be enjoyed?
And about edibles – I really don’t think they deserve the bad rap. In reputable shops, they come sealed and labeled with clear THC content. For beginners, 10–20 mg THC is a very reasonable dose – enough to feel it, but not enough to ruin your evening. I personally started with edibles long before I ever inhaled anything – no issues whatsoever, as long as you can do basic math. Say you buy a cookie with 80 mg THC – just take a quarter and wait. Two full hours. Then reassess. If you can't wait that long, the problem isn’t the edible – it’s patience.
A quiet evening in the hotel, a little truffle, no smoke, no pressure – it can actually be a perfect first experience.
