Bed and Net
Not sure if anyone has ever used this place, but I was searching for an affordable alternative to Hotel Abba and came across this place: http://bedandnet.com/.
The location is great. It's a canal-side house at 705 Keizersgracht, which is between Herengracht and Prinsengracht. The house is 4 stories and he offers different size rooms within his smoker friendly home. He also has quite a few reviews on TripAdvisor and most of them are very positive.
I came across this place by way of wimdu.com, a British company that appears to be almost an exact clone of airbnb.com (based in San Francisco), which describes itself as "global network of accommodations offered by locals." Basically, they have listings of rooms and apartments offered by individuals who are subletting their residence (or part of it). It sounded pretty cool, but I didn't like the fact that full payment was required after the host confirmed your reservation. The company does hold your payment and will not release it to the host until 24 hours after successful check-in, but I was still a bit wary and in the process of checking up on the guy who owns the place on Keizersgracht, I discovered he had his own website and only requires you to pay for the first night.
The room I reserved is only 40 euros a night, is on the third floor, and shares a bath on the floor below. The house does have WIFI and the rooms even have computers in them if you don't bring a laptop or tablet.
Just thought I would share this for those looking for alternative accommodations.

From the FAQ
Anybody tried this place yet?
Can I smoke in the rooms?
You are free to smoke whatever you like in your room. It is Amsterdam after all.

lol I think I had looked at that room myself, on an apartment booking site... you got the library room? For the record, the penthouse room, or master suite, whatever you want to call it, looks sweeeeeeet!

I've taken the plunge and booked the Library for 3 nights.FriendlyEdgar wrote:lol I think I had looked at that room myself, on an apartment booking site... you got the library room? For the record, the penthouse room, or master suite, whatever you want to call it, looks sweeeeeeet!
Have to put up with shared bathroom, but that's no worse
than at Zeeburg and a hell of a lot closer to the action.
Will report back afterwards...

Re: Bed and Net
I stayed at this place with a mate in the summer. Stayed in the penthouse bit, pretty cool no curtains so take a blindfold although to be fair the nights are longer now so should'nt be a problem.
Think each room/apartment has a vaporiser in it. No TV but each room has a computer with web access.
Alan's a pretty cool host, and the house is right round the corner from Barneys Lounge and not too far from de pijp.

Barney's Lounge and Stix are closest, though they have had mixed write ups (I've tried neither).Alan's a pretty cool host, and the house is right round the corner from Barneys Lounge and not too far from de pijp.
The C/S around Rembrandtsplein are to be universally avoided, by all accounts.
However, it is only about 400m to het Ballonetje, and the same the other way to Mellow Yellow
and Little, so I think I'll probably manage

Yeah man you'll be good.
Worth the trip up to de pijp to visit Katsu and Club Media as well.

Re: Bed and Net
Stayed there in the Penthouse Room with a mate in December last year.
Big couch in front of the huge flat TV, PC with Internet Access (PC is also connected to the TV), small kitchen (with refrigerator), small shower, a terrace and upstairs a small double bed. Very smoker friendly with a Vaporizer also in the room. A little bit dirty for me but cool people hosting it and Barneys is just around the corner.
