First 1.5 days trip report

Post by trajhip2000 »

Airport shuttle picked me up at 5:15 AM Saturday, tough start to my trip! But I got my upgrades thru to AMS, so no worries. Touched down at 7 AM Sunday, grabbed the hotel shuttle to the Marriott - amazingly enough I was able to check in when I arrived. After a nice hot shower I was on my way...

First stop was Amnesia. Very quiet, just a couple tables occupied. I thought it was a really chill space, comfortable benches with pillows, and nice music (mostly old R&B). Grabbed gms of the Amnesia Haze, Sage & Sour, and Caramello. The Amnesia Haze was a bit of a disappointment, not all that crystally and potency was just okay. The Sage & Sour is the smelliest weed I've bought so far, out-reeks everything else. Caramello was very smooth, a really nice smoke. They had Nevilles Haze but only little buds left, and the Honey Bee was pretty ugly so I passed. Overall, a very pleasant space, but I wasn't super impressed with the weed. I will say that the two gals working there did a great job of keeping the place clean, they even cleaned the windows inside and out while I was there.

Next up was Grey Area. Pretty packed when I went in around 1, but I managed to snag a stool. Got gms of Grey Haze, Sour Cream, and Grey Mist crystals. The Grey Haze was killer, a real high-energy stone. Sour Cream was also very nice, great taste and a really well-balanced buzz. Crystals are the usual high quality. The bud guy was really friendly (taller balding guy with glasses). I'll be back there for sure this weekend.

Headed down to Noon next, grabbed 2 g of Blueberry (cheap at something like 11-12 EU/2 gm). Sat and smoked a couple bong hits - the counter guy was reasonably friendly, dug around for a straw for my drink, got a poker for the bowl etc., but I think I was the only non-Arabic speaker in there and didn't feel totally comfortable. Seems like one of the better Blueberry batches - the Blueberry smell isn't real strong but the buds are plenty crystally, and give a nice relaxing stone.

Speaking of relaxing, at this point I decided to head back to my hotel room to grab a much-needed nap. I didn't feel incredibly stoned until I laid down and closed my eyes and the room started spinning like crazy - nice!!

Woke up about 2 hours later, still pretty stoned but not sleepy any more. Headed over to Katsu, grabbed a gm of the Haze Silver Pearl, and a half-gm of Crystal Clear. The HSP was decent but not as good as the Grey Haze. I didn't really look at the Crystal Clear until I got back to my hotel room later on, and realised that there was some sort of plastic film involved - I ended up going by Katsu Sun at noon when they opened to find out what to do with it. The CC is indeed spread on a plastic film, I guess you're supposed to peel it off the film while it's still cold. No fridge in my hotel here (and no ice machines  ), so that'll have to wait until I'm back in the Dam on Thurs night.

Let's see, iirc I hit Bluebird next. Really crowded, had to wait a little while to see the menu. I ended up asking the guy what his best sativa was, he recommended the AK47 so I got a gm (haven't smoked it yet). I asked about Cheese, he said he expects some back in but doesn't know when. Looked like a pretty nice place to hang, with stools in front of both the upstairs and downstairs windows.

Wandered around to find something to eat, ended up grabbing some wok stuff at Lemon Grass, not bad. I could only finish about half of it, as it was sitting on the bench next to me some guy came up and asked if I was finished, so I gave it to him - hope he liked lots of chili pepper on his noodles!

Next stop was Greenhouse Centrum. When I walked by before getting dinner it looked fairly empty, but now it was packed. Asked for their best sativa and Super Silver Haze was recommended. Got a gm of that plus a gm of Xmas Tree or something like that, supposedly a not super heavy indica. When I got back to the hotel room later on I realised the bags weren't labeled, and I'll be damned if I can tell which is which - so I guess I need to stop back for an ID...

After GC I went by Nes - overall, this might have been my favorite spot of the day. Busy but not too crowded. Grabbed a beer and asked to see the menu, the guy that showed it to me (Simon?) was super friendly, pulling out stuff for me to look at, squeezing buds so I could smell, etc. I ended up with gms of the SSH and Hash Plant Haze. Asked to borrow a bong - not only did he clean it up fresh for me, he also loaded it with ice water. After a number of bong hits of HPH and a 2nd beer I decided to head back to my hotel, which turned out to involve 2 hours of wandering around the Dam in a daze...

Found myself on Leidsestraat and decided to stop in at Dolphins for a nightcap. Really nice space, I could see hanging here for a while. Small menu tho, only 3 types of bud and a couple hashes. Got a gm of the White Dolphin plus a gm of the Royal Dolphin hash, after a couple smooth hits of the latter it was closing time and I was ready to call it a night.

Next morning I hit the hotel buffet, then off to Katsu to get info on the CC. While I was there I killed a joint of the White Dolphin, a really nice morning smoke, woke me up but didn't get me wired. Wandered up to Baba to get a little bong for the rest of my trip - almost stopped in at Greenhouse Effect, but decided to save that for the upcoming weekend. Back to the Marriott to grab my bags, taxi to the train station, and out to my conference. Now I'm counting the hours till Thurs afternoon when I'm back in the Dam...

I have digital photos of all the stuff I bought, will post when I figure out how to do that.

Nice report trajhip2000. Looks like you did a little walking in the short time you were there. I can see you're pretty well stocked up until you return this week, very good.

back in the States, and back on the board... My plan was to post more while I was there, but I didn't really get the chance to log on the last couple days (which is too bad, I would've known to go by Grey Area again and ask about the Martian Mean Green...). Anyhow, rather than trying to reconstruct things chronologically, I'll just go down the list of the places I hit my last couple days.

Pink Floyd - nice little shop, cool music. Got a gm of the Dirty Jack which was superb, a great high-energy sativa high. And since I'm a sucker for Moroccan hash, I also grabbed a gm of the Umma Gumma - nice sweet taste and a very pleasant buzz. PF sells their stuff in red-tinted ziplocs, which makes it easy to ID (more on this later...).

Barney's - went by the new one on Reguliersgracht. Nice space, good lighting, lots of Volcanos - but it was pretty dead both times I stopped in (once early evening, once late evening). Grabbed a gm of Laughing Buddha, which may be my favorite weed ever - a unique fruity-musky aroma and a really pleasant sativa buzz. Also had to try the Barney Rubble - a granular iceolater made from Amnesia Haze, super strong and perfect for rolling in a joint. Went back the next evening for some Buddhas Sister, sweet smell and taste and a relaxing indica buzz.

Dampkring - stopped in about 1030 on a Sat AM and it was packed. Got some Nevilles Haze - first time I've seen this that it was worth buying, nicely frosty and a great haze aroma. Very high-energy buzz, I'd rate this a very close 2nd to the Laughing Buddha for best bud of the trip. Had to try the NYC Diesel since we don't get the grapefruit version of Diesel here in the US, very nice smoke. Finally, I got a gm of their best Moroccan hash, the Noor - probably the best of the Moroccan I got this trip, very sweet and clean and a great "up" hash stone. Headed over to Tweede Kamer to see if I could grab a seat, but they were packed too...

Mellow Yellow - happened by this place on my way to the Leideseplein. Grabbed a gm of the White Melon, had an interesting aroma and taste but just a so-so buzz. Nice space, lots of seats in the upstairs area.

Nes - this was my favorite late-night stop, good place to grab some drinks and a nice smoke. I picked up some Pot of Gold, favorite indica of the trip - super frosty, sweet taste, and very stoney. Also tried the Grand Cru Moroccan hash as recommended by Simon the bartender - as good as any of the other Moroccans I bought except for the Rifman Noof from Dampkring, and the cheapest at 9 euros/gm.

Homegrown Fantasy - almost next door to the Sofitel, my hotel for Thurs night. Inviting space, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and real coffee (I think...). I asked for a good AM smoke and she recommended the Sour Cream - I already had some from Grey Area and decided to do a comparison. Both are clearly the same strain, the GA version might be a touch frostier, but they were very close. Indeed a good AM smoke.

Hit the Melkweg on Sat night, first for dinner at Eat At Jo's (very good) and then the Black Keys in the Oude Zaal. I have to say that I have never been in a place as (cigarette) smokey as the Oude Zaal. I thought I read they are weed-friendly, but only smelled weed smoke once (other than my own) - I was standing by the sbd and one of the security guys as stationed right in front of it, he kept looking around like he was trying to catch someone toking up, but I didn't see anybody get nabbed.

Had a couple great meals at Nam Kee, the oysters in black bean sauce are as good as they say.

Strongest smoke of the trip - hands down the Crystal Clear from Katsu. I don't know how they make this stuff, but it's as potent as some of the butane extracts I get from CA med clubs that are supposed to be in the 50+% THC range. Kind of a pain to deal with since it comes between two pieces of plastic film. If you chill it down you can peel one side off, I then used a metal nail file to scrape it off the backing piece, probably managed to recover about 80% of it. To carry it with me in an easily smokeable form I made some small balls of it and rolled them in Grey Mist Crystals to get rid of the stickiness. Barney Rubble a close 2nd here.

Favorite bud - Laughing Buddha like I mentioned earlier, if I could smoke only one weed the rest of my life this would be it. Nevilles Haze a close 2nd, honorable mentions to White Dolphin, SSH and Pot of Gold from Nes.

Favorite place for breakfast - Rene's Croissants, on Damstraat by Paradise. This was also my favorite nighttime snack stop - only downside is the coffee comes from one of those stupid pushbutton machines that seem to be ubiquitous these days...

Places I wish I'd hung out more - Amnesia, Homegrown Fantasy, Dolphins.

Regrets - really only that I was there by myself, would have been a lot more fun with a traveling/smoking companion.

Biggest surprise of the trip - on Sun AM before I left I swung by the Coin, and gifted my leftover smoke to a couple young English guys (hopefully they heeded my warnings on the potency of the CC and Barney Rubble, and next time I'll try and hook up with someone from the board to pass this stuff along). While I was showing them what everything was I noticed that the little red ziploc with the Umma Gumma wasn't with everything else, just figured I dropped it somewhere. While running around the Dam I kept all my smoke in a Nike backpack, that went in a gym bag in my checked luggage on departure - as I was walking away from the United counter after checking in for my flight back to the US I had this vision that the little red bag with the UG was stuck in a pocket in that backpack... I had shaken it out really good that morning before I packed it so I decided that it couldn't really still be in there, and anyways there was nothing I could do about it. I was a little nervous coming thru Customs in Wash. DC, but no problems at all. Get home, open up the bag, and there it is!! I do not recommend that anyone try this, I was extremely lucky - but what a great welcome home present!

As far as a comparison between Dutch coffeeshop weed and NorCal med stuff... I think a lot of what we get here is more "boutique" grown in smaller batches, usually with a better flush/cure, and some Dutch stuff - like what passes for OG Kush over there - is nowhere near as good as what we get here. But overall I was very impressed with the quality of Dutch weed, especially on the sativa side (medical stuff leans heavily to indicas) - and I love the whole coffeeshop scene. In fact, I can't wait to go back! Trying to convince the wife we should head there for 420 since it's close to our 20th anniversary, but since she doesn't smoke it's not an easy sell

if anybody has any questions about any of this, just ask.

again, I have pics of most of what I bought, just need some time to figure out how to post them.

kudos again to the board for all the great info I got before my trip, really made it a lot better.

okay, I guess I gotta go back to work now

Super report, you seem to have got it all down and there was a lot to get down by the looks of it as well.

About the photos, firstly you have to find a hosting site (such as imageshack) where you can upload the photos from your computer.

Click the IMG tab that you see above the text box when you are posting, then either type or paste the URL address that the hosting site uses for your picture, then click IMG again to close it off.

When you click submit, your photo will appear in the post.

i feel the same about the Dutch CS weed vs. the cali medical stuff.
I really looking forward to trying that crystal clear, as i've been having alot of oil around here and i think that will be the only thing that can compare.

thanks, I hope to take you up on that offer someday. It's my fault really, I meant to hit the 420 gathering on Fri but came back to my room around 3 to get out of the rain, and ended up falling asleep for a couple hrs.

You were lucky getting some home. You probably would have been caught if it was intentional, because life is just like that!
