Nov 24-29 report

Post by dropshot »

First time to the Dam. Here's my long winded report. Not a lot of shops visited since I only had 4 days there and my travel companion can't keep up with my smoking rate...

Arrived in the middle of a sleet storm on Friday morning and my travelling companion, "Sleepy" I'll call him, forgot his jacket at my house in the US. Taxi refused to drive us to the hotel (too close to lose his spot in line I guess) but I pretty much had no idea where to go (we were about 4 blocks from Centraal right off Damrak.)... Headed down the street I stopped at one hotel to ask where ours was. "Two minutes away" she says. It was 50 feet around the corner! I figured out later, everything is always "Two minutes away" when you ask. Sleepy was not having a good time yet.

After the storm I headed out to walk around because Sleepy was earning his nickname. I told him he'd get jet lagged and miss all the fun... Anyways I went out and the sweet odors wafting through the neighborhood. Popped into Blues Brothers and got some Bubble Gum. Minimum 10 Euro purchase. Took it back to the hotel to get my buddy to wake the F*$^ up. Pretty good smoke, but there should be better around. I think I may end up with a lot of weed for 4 days  Mind you, I didn't do a lot of research current favorites, I just got familiar names of some tried and true ones.

I finally woke my friend up and we headed out to see the city. We ended up at the 420 Cafe and loaded up the Volcano with some Nepal hash I bought from them and one other typoe I forget. It's been almost 20 years since I've even SEEN hash. I must say, the Volcano rocks, but the hash was sort of a let down. I mean I got high, really high, but I think my tolerance is pretty damn high too... My friend was higher than high he was his usual way when really stoned, annoying at times, but always a laugh. He enjoyed himself immensely as did I. The Amstel drafts were great, nothing like the swill they send to us in the States. We enjoyed this shop and made it our final spot each night, besides the pastry shop across the way from it! Chocolate covered waffles... Mmmmmm

We tried to find out where the Sky Sportscafe is to meet Professor Horsecollar there for the Texas/Texas A&M game. We found one in Leidesplein called Pancake Corner. I don't know if it's the right one, but there were alot of Texans there, and one that thinks I must be an undercover agent. Probably thinks "Are you the Professor?" is some kind of secret code... It became a popular saying between Sleepy and I ont he trip. The game started a couple hours later than we thought it was supposed to so we hit an Indian food place called Maurya near there. Awesome food. Then we tried some coffeeshop right around the corner from the Pancake Corner. I don't remember the name, but it was really poor service so it's not worth remembering. My buddy wanted to try the Thai. It looked like shit, smelled like shit, & tasted like the compacted Mexican I get here, but it was pretty stoney and we had a alot now since it was 3.4g for 10 euro. Not at all what I came here for. Never found the Professor that night, but got really drunk on Heineken draft, again nothing like the swill they send us in the States. Are you the Professor?

Saturday we headed out after getting Sleepy to wake up. Dude sleeps too much. I smoked more Thai in the morning, Sleepy didn't or he would sleep all day. Smoked some hash with it too. Hey I like to smoke, ALOT and the Thai wasn't cutting it, so I did some bubblegum too. We went to do touristy stuff, lots of others doing touristy stuff and we hate looooooong lines so we went in and out of cafes and rode the canal cruise. Sleepy slept for awhile on the boat and I took pics of him sleeping and of cool stuff. I forget what else we did most of the day, probably went back to the hotel for Sleepy agian  So I think I smoked more Thai. Gotta get rid of that shit. Checked out the RDL that night for awhile  and stopped at the Belgian Cafe (I think that was the name) on the way back to the hotel area. Lots of Trappist Ales in that place. 8) We then stopped at the 420 for a nightcap of heavy Volcano sessions. Met some dude named Chris from Scotland and some folks from the US and had a great time. Got pretty drunk, too. The 420 is cool because it's more a bar like atmosphere where you can smoke and they play classic rock. In darker places, I turn into Sleepy when I'm high.

Sunday we went to Brussels. Tracks closed about an hour into the trip. Had to detour back to Ultrecht then east and back around into Roosendal. 3 hour delay. We get really lost in Brussels for a bit (yeah I can do that sometimes) then find Grand Place at have some Hoegaarden Wit. I love that stuff, and to have it there made it extra delicious. 8) Found the little pissing kid statue. I expected it to be bigger and on some big building for some reason. Well anyways cute little guy but now I need Belgian Chocolate so on we go. Found the chocolate 8) got a Hoegaarden 50cl glass and back to the train we went. Brakes caught fire on the way back, 20 minute delay. Yeah lets get light rail all over the US. We got back and headed straight to the 420. Volcano! I think I bought some White Widow that night too. Then we went ot the RDL and the Red Light Coffeeshop where we got some spacecakes right when they were closing up shop. No alcohol there, had a 7UP used the toilet. Walked the RDL some more  then went back to the hotel for sleep. Sleepy snores like a friggin motor boat BTW and I forgot ear plugs.

Monday is hard to remember I think I stared out with hash and real coffee, I love real coffe too. I think we went to the Anne Frank House then walked all over the city. I figured out the tram system that day when the hash wore off  We stopped a lot of places and drank beers while checking out the sights. That night we hit the 420 again to start the night then went to the RDL again... Hey, that place is cool at night... Stopped at Stone's Cafe and smoked more of tha Thai while we had Heinekens on draft for a while. Got pretty toasted and went a round in the RDL. Found Sleepy back at the hotel later that all drunk and happy. Went to the 420 to finsh off all the hash in the Volcano as we had to leave the next morning. Got back to the hotel after hitting the pastry shop on the way back. Went one more time for another paninni while doing my damndest to finish all the weed. Well, except for enough in the morning. I ate the spacecakes on the flight back Tuesday. They tasted horrible and didn't feel too much from them. My sisters brownies are much better. They make you melt.

All in all, I fell in love with Amsterdam. Very easy going, beautiful place. I will be back real soon. ACD was a great resource since I didn't have a lot of time to research. Sure wish I could've found the Professor, though... :D

Hey Dropshot -

Sounds like you had a good time. Me and the old lady were actually the first to arrive for the game at 5:50 and got the management interested in getting things cranked up, although a couple Horns heard my commotion and quickly lent their support. You're right, there ended up to be about 60 Texans sitting up on the second floor, and since you said you were from Austin, early on I was approaching the burnt orange bedecked, wearing my Aggie get-up, axing them "Are you Dropshot?" When I 'splained they were copacetic, but I wish I had made a sign like I planned to - but like so many things, it just kinda fell by the wayside. Anyway, we both ate and stayed until halftime, then we got up and went outside and walked around to try to stay awake, then we went back upstairs and lasted about 5 minutes into the second half, until it was useless anymore - we had to get back to the room and crash! I don't think we could have toughed it out even if the Ags had been in the lead; we were just dead. Hey, dammit! That just means we have to try again next year!

LOL! I'm from Austin but far from a Horns fan! I love it when they lose, I am in agony with the National Championship hype right now...

We got there at 4 or so and found out the game started at 6, so we ended up getting pretty trashed at that crappy coffeeshop and got back at the 2nd half opening. So you were one of those people... So close!

Maybe next year. 8)

Hey maz, I'm going home to visit the family in AZ next week. Any coffeshops there yet? I get way paranoid in AZ nowdays ever since Ev Mecham was Guv, then I moved away... I hate the drive out there always looking in the mirror, one eye on the radar detector  Gosh I wanna move to the Dam!

I'd offer to meet up for a beer, but I'll be on a tight schedule to visit everyone while I'm there. But in the name of the ACD I will smoke out and think of y'all, just as I did the Professor in the Dam...
